Do you paint? If yes, what models interest you the most? And go from there.
To a casual standard. Based on some conversations with folks at our local store, I think Infinity is the way to go. The models are the main reason.

Your painted miniatures will always have a special meaning to you no matter which games you play. Forget about the rest of the useless comments. They reflect their opinions but never able to address your desire.

20 sided dice are one of the things that make Infinity so much better than d6 games. It's much harder for random stupidity to occur every five seconds when everyone doesn't have an automatic 16% chance to fail because they roll a 1 on a d6. Also because you sometimes need high numbers and sometimes need low numbers, you can't cook your dice like you can with d6 games. Infinity's game mechanics are really well done in a very subtle way.
Wow, that's a really good point. Hadn't thought about that, but it is definitely one of the things that makes D20 games feel really razor-sharp compared to D6 stuff (including D6 roleplaying), which can feel really clumsy. Thanks for pointing that out.
On the downside, the math in Infinity can make your head hurt a bit after a game. Lots of modifiers to account for on every roll. After my game last night I felt like I'd just taken the SATs. I highly recommend having something to eat around during a game, or you -will- run out of energy and get stupid partway through.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

The MODs are tricky at the begining. Then you realise that they are all +3 or -3 based modifiers, usually eliminating each other.
-"Leseee... I have +3 for the range, and -3 'cause you have cover, then I have +3 'cause I'm using a 5man fireteam and -3 because you have mimetism... and finally I'm shooting using my standar BS value."

One of the main things I try to tell people is calculate your modifiers AFTER you roll the dice. You'll find that a majority of the time the dice are either so high or so low that the result is obvious.

The only time that isn't such great advice is when they're deciding on an ARO - they'll definitely want to figure out whether they're better off dodging (or dropping smoke) than shooting before they commit to a decision! Obviously that'll depends on estimating the distances involved correctly, too.

Heh of course I mean after AROs are declared... just realized sadly that I've played some many games I know in a heartbeat what AROs to make.
