How do you play it?
A good DM will concentrate less on the rules/die rolls and more on the story. The game should flow as if you are a character in a movie to which your decisions (roleplaying) are or are not affected by chance (die role).
Yes it's important to know your character...what he can do and what he has for gear....the rest is just fun.
i.e. 3 decades ago in one of my earliest games, we entered a 9x9 room with a bunch of nasties...I cast fireball.....but the area of effect was 9x9...lol...not much chance to get a breath of fresh air...those closest to the door were given a 'chance' to get out....
Me? I needed divine intervention....
