If it's for a game I'm about to buy or something, sort of.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I like spoilers, but prefer them to be labelled, otherwise my curiosity gets the better of me and it's almost as if the spoiler didn't exist in the first place.

It's also far more preferable to visit threads with massed Utube embeddings if they're all spoilered; IE has a heart attack everytime I try to load a "What are you listening to now?" type thread, and also if I posted a reply in a thread which is then bombarded by embedded videos, I can't actually see replies to my comment unless I wait on hold whilst IE tries to negotiate with the webpage, which can appear very rude and can take pretty damn long.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I think the point is that for a lot of people, fiction isn't necessarily enjoyed in the same way as a sporting contest, it isn't about suspense over what's going to happen next. It's interesting that ahtman's study shows that is actually true of most people, that while they're conditioned to resent a spoiled ending, when it appears that the spoiler is actually part of the story they tend to enjoy it more.

I'm not saying you're wrong for enjoying stories the way you do, and people certainly are being douches when they spoil a story without bothering to consider if someone else might not want to know what happens, but it is interesting that people seem more opposed in theory to spoilers than they might actually be.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Plus, if the Spoiler tag is early enough in the thread/post here on Dakka, the spoilered info shows up in the hover preview.

That's why you should make sure you have a load of space at the beginning of your answer, before you give the spoiler.

Depends wholy on what it is;

No Russian on whatever game that was? Don't care, spoil to your hearts content!

A certain event halfway through Gears 3 or the end of Bioshock 1? You best be putting that in spoilers.

It kind of does with me. If I know the end of something (say a movie) I am more likely not to watch it.

Like

Spoiler:
Game of thrones, I found out that Sean Bean's character dies(as do many other people). He was pretty much the only reason I started watching the series and I really don't feel like watching everyone get killed off

A lesser example is that if my room mate is watching the walking dead and I catch maybe 5 minutes of it. I lose the wish to watch the whole thing. Why bother? I know whats going to happen to the characters.

Game of Thrones:
Spoiler:

Thing is, very early in that book, when Robert is visiting Winterfell, you
get early hints that Ned Stark is going to die. At one point, he even says
to his wife that he wants to pass the cup to another, a Biblical allusion
to the sacrifice of Christ.

Yea, but foreshadowing is done by the author.

Whereas spoiling is done by degenerate mouth breathers.

Spoiling annoys me especially because it's not something you can take back or replace. Let's say your video game gets broken, you buy a new one, but the ending gets spoiled, well you can't erase your memory. You're essentially robbed of a one-time experience.

Of course all that makes it sound rather dramatic, but spoiling is still no fun.

"They are not your worst nightmare; they are your every nightmare."
"Let the galaxy burn!"
