Poe isnt the only literary influence on the Raven Guard fluff.
Corvus Corax's 'origin story' appears to be heavily based on the classic Robert Heinlen novel 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'.
That's all I got though...

That'll do. You've single-handedly doubled the visible influences on the design right there. Not bad for a first post.

Well that dates back to the original fluff. Dark Angels were very specifically "Native American" themed. The stories in the original Deathwing anthology.

I have never made that connection. That's pretty good, man.

Wait, the Dark Angels are Native American themed? I would have thought that the Raven Guard would have fit that somewhat better but there has been so much mixing and matching going on.

The Deathwing story features Dark Angels Terminators returning to their Native-American-themed homeworld, which has been infested by Genestealers. Their white armour comes from this story (which I think is worth reading).
However, the Dark Angels recruit from several worlds (as they're based in the Rock), so I'd suggest there may well be others with different Earth-culture themes. In this sense the Chapter as a whole may be drawn from several distinct cultures. Remember Azrael's quote from one edition's Codex, along the lines of: "From this point on, you are a Dark Angel; the Chapter is all that matters." So, perhaps they try to discourage these ties to their past.

They're morose, like black and white and keep to the shadows. They do have gothic traits so far as goths themselves have traits.

Corax was morose, after creating an army of monsters. I haven't seen any of them act morose since.
