The Faye

It was definitely McNeill, I found after reading an email from him.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Spoiler:
Arthava frees only the Marines who would follow him, nothing is mentioned about marines from Loyalist chapters. So either the others were too far gone mentally, or would not listen to a Thousand Son.

As previous posters i enjoyed the book and the revelations, though the ending was a bit wham its done.

The irony of the timeline is that Magnus traveled to Terra and caused all the damage but was too late, Magnus didnt know that or he wouldnt have set out in the first place. He also had no idea he would cause so much damage, the Emperor then showed him the consequence of his actions. I believe this is why Magnus retreated into himself as he did on Prosperp. As he knew he caused more damage to the Imperium that Horus had at that point. Think about it he wiped out Terra's communication structure, the majority of its astropathic choirs meaning they were unable to communicate with the other Loyal Legions as efficiently as they would have liked. So they couldnt then organise a showdown/battle before Horus got to Terra, Magnus opened the path for Horus.

Spoiler:
However as per the regicide game, that was exactly what the Emperor wanted, draw Horus in then strike right at the end just when Horus thinks he has won and lets his guard slip. Its also interesting that the Chaos Gods were angry at the outcome, implying a slowly dying Imperium was not their goal which has been suggested before.

I do agree with you.

I've been happy with the Heresy series for the most part, but some of the revelations and the authors personal interpretations of the characters have been a little off the mark in my opinion. Somethings are left better to your own imagination, filling in the blanks as you see fit. Being told a story of a time when everything was dark in the Imperium, a time of such amazing evil and unheard of heroism, can only leave you a little empty and wanting more at the end of it. I'm glad they have decided to write about it, but I'm also unhappy that they decided to write about it, if you get me.

Some things are best left as legends.

Judging by the timings here, Russ would of know of Horus' betrayal when he was sent to 'apprehend' Magnus, as it was common knowledge on terra, with people revolting etc.

In a moment of speculation, the Big E may have sent Russ to remove Magnus altogether as he may have foreseen Magnus' betrayal (and/or seen his corruption when he 'visited' him) and wanted to remove him from the picture (in his typical gentle manner) but Tzeentch intevened.

In Prospero Burns Russ is trying to communicate through Hawser before the Razing of Prospero. He mentions that Magnus has sent a message to the Emperor trying to convince him that Horus has rebelled. This is after they have already been warned by one on of their own, Eada Haelfwulf.

Spoiler:

‘The Warmaster we admire and follow will cease to be,’ said Eada. - Prospero Burns Page 326

Spoiler:
'Magnus claimed that great Horus was about to turn against the Imperium,’ said Russ. ‘From the look on your face, Ahmad Ibn Rustah, I see you recognise how ridiculous that sounds.’ - Prospero Burns Page 334

I think that if the Emperor believed Horus had rebelled he would have warned Russ, but clearly there is no concern that Horus has turned. Which is a bit naive on the Wolf Kings behalf, seeing as he received two warnings.

If the Emperor believed that Horus had turned, then he would have had to warn Russ of the fact. It'd be bad enough if it was just a random primarch, but Horus was warmaster, as such he would be able to order Russ around with the full authority of the Emperor. If the Emperor sends Russ out into the galaxy without telling him that Horus has rebelled, and therefore should be ignored, then for all intents and purposes, he is giving Horus access to additional forces. There's no reason why Horus couldn't tell Russ to nuke a couple of loyal Forge Worlds on the way to Prospero, and there's no reason why Russ wouldn't obey him.

The Emperor has done some stupid stuff over the course of the series, but not telling Russ that his superior in the chain of command has rebelled is just completely insane.
