Why not? I am assuming you are giving them a standard bearer, who can take a magic standard worth up to 50 points. The Razor standard is 45 points according to my book.
If I am missing some rule, please, tell me. Don't forget to cite sources.

Would still rather have both that and the slingshot banner (extra d6 charge).

TG are Str5 so they have good damage output. I don't know of much that you wouldn't want to charge, outside of Mindrazored elves with a flaming banner.

my lizard army basically consists of a slann, a large templeguard unit and 2 huge saurus units, about 25 each, teradons, sallys and a scar vet
and before anyone rages about large units, this works incredibly well and if i get the charge i can overrun just about anything. i have beaten about 90% of the games i have played, the 10% due to then popping my temple guard with obscenely hard units, usually vampire and ghouls with crown and mindrazor. i give the slann death or life depending on the enemys army, if there character heavy. with death and the free dice teaching you can get an obscene amount of spells off, i think the best ive done is cast all 6 spells and have 5 dice left over cos i got lucky with purple sun.
so basically, it all depends on what you want your slann to do, is he gonna buff units, is he gonna be a character killer, or a unit killer or something else? if your not quite sure then i would take shadow, its great all round and strength 10 skinks is about as funny as you can get.

You are one brave man to actually cast purple sun with a temple slaan, that misfire is clearly part of those 10%

It sounds like Life and Light are the fore-runners. Can anyone talk to me about Lore of Beasts? Good close combat buffs, a couple of powerful magic missiles, and it seems to me that turning your Temple Slann into a monster makes the unit into something of a deathstar. What do you think?

The lizardmen FAQ forbids slaan from transforming.
Other than that savage beast of horrors is epic fun with scar vets, there was a list with five cold one vets with GWs and a beast slaan all in a saurus unit that really messed up stuff.

So, with a Loremaster Slann I'm better off with Light or Life.
Um... why can't they cast that spell? That seems like an odd ruling.

Its mostly a game balance thing tbh, because Slann can buy non wargear based abilities and come with an in built ward save they can become incredibly powerful when transformed and remain incredibly cheap. An ethernal monster with a ward save and other support abilities for 300 odd points is pretty broken.

I have played my Slann solo with lore of light for over a year now in tournament play and find it to be incredible. 2-30man saurus blocks coupled with the buffs makes them nasty. I've been told it is the toughest lizardmen army many of my opponents have faced, mainly due to light.
I have also seen metal and death work extremely well. Metal let's you deal with hydras, stanks, etc. and death allows you to simply kill every character on the board FTW, and is the best option out there against the unkillable dreadlord.
I do like Heavens quite a bit, but don't play with enough skink priests to make it really worth it.
