If you're playing Fantasy, this is some of the best epic nerd metal/rock out there. Bal Sagoth is also worth a mention here. More metal and screamo but just as nerdy.
A couple of suggestions:
The Venom Inside - Chimaira - http://youtu.be/uTB1gzdWqFE - This song opens up every single home game my friends and I play. I encourage you to do the same.
Rodrigo y Gabriela - Amazing acoustic guitars. They used to be in a metal band, quit and made this group. Lots of metal influence, no lyrics, perfect for gaming.
Opeth - Damnation, Blackwater Park, Heritage. Perfect for gaming and one of my favorite bands period.
Dj Shadow - His new album (The less you know the better) is nice, little ambient, good in the backgroup. Endtroducing is also epic.
Aphex Twin - Drukqs, The Richard D. James Album, Selected Ambient works. - Sporadic, noise/techno. Something for everyone here. The video for "Come To Daddy" is one of the best of all time.
Alexisonfire - Anything by them really, but Crisis is their best album. Be sure to check out the B-side tracks My God's a Reasonable Man and Thrones. Here's Thrones: http://youtu.be/yuG7ckPdo5M
That's just a few to start with.

Ogres - 2500 and growing

I was initially perplexed after listening to that tune, but now, I can completely see that!
EDIT:
I also like Aphex Twin! Even though I posted a bunch of Metal. I just can't do techno and space wolves, Eldar maybe.... Heh.

Does that mean you haven't liked anything anyone has posted so far?
That's to bad.

I just got the Contagion soundtrack. Makes for some great 40k music. Excellent soundtrack.

Since the stuff I linked (emmy nominated, amazon top 30 sales of all time etc) was not metal and is fairly different from it, I am curious as to what you consider 'not painful'? None of the metal appeals to me either, but I am curious as to why you'd state your distain and offer no recommendation of your own?

My thoughts exactly. At least contribute to the thread instead of hating on other peoples preferences of music.

Band Unknown (Don't know the name) = we are the chosen ones.
Tali'Zorah: I appreciate what you're doing here, Shepard.
Commander Shepard: Well, I care deeply about the quarian people.
Tali'Zorah: It's good to be back on the Normandy.
Commander Shepard: Let me know if it's too quiet for you to sleep, and I'll find you someplace louder.
Tali'Zorah: Hmm.
Garrus Vakarian: Uh, I was there when you two had your thing, remember? Just get a room and work it out.
I do find the amount of people here who listen to metal interesting... music is banned at the club I go to and most of the guys there seem to have a fetish for 90s pop anyway...
For myself, I don't really listen to music when gaming, I just can't really concentrate on the tabletop and as mentioned prior, music is banned at my club, no idea why.
Painting is a different story though, it's probably where I do most of my music listening and I pump mainly Sludge Metal, (Buzzov*en, Eyehategod, Electric Wizard, Kylesa) Death Metal (Obituary, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse) and some Folk (Nordic stuff, Wardruna, Ruhr Hunter, Blood of the Black Owl, etc)
I killed a man, 'cause he killed my goat
I put my hands around his throat
He tried to reason with the sky and the clouds
But it didn't matter, 'cause they can't hear a sound
Hmm I don't think i've ever actually had a game with music on, not a concious decision mind, though i think it would distract me a bit. I paint to various classical compilations during the day and my MP3 on shuffle in the evenings and look at the forums/net with Last FM on so all random stuff, metal/dance/rock/pop.
5000pts Order of the Bloody Rose
2000pts Cadian.

I prefer instrumental movie scores. The old Conan scores, the transformers scores,LOTR scores, the pirates of the caribbean scores, the Gladiator score and so on and so forth
