I have a seperate 2 car garage with shelves for all of my stuff that is in Storage. (unpainted/unassembled stuff). I used to have alot more stuff than I do now.

I regret getting rid of every. single. model.

Never doing that again. I found a box of old RT era Rhinos and predators that I had no intention of using the other day. It's getting given to a friend in exchange for assembling a couple of Chaos Hellcannons for me. Those models I don't care about and need to be fixed bad, which is stuff my friend loves to do.

Can't say there's stuff I'll never sell, but it's mostly things that have since been replaced by new models (Chaos Terminators) or things that I got in a big lot I bought with something that I already have (Gorthor, unopened. He'll end up on Ebay one day.)

Well, normally I agree that painted stuff is the last thing to get rid of.

I'd still ask the question: even painted, are you likely to use those models?

Well, you might be able to find smaller storage lockers, closer in size to a big closet. Just bin up the stuff and put it in storage. Set a time limit, say, two years. If you haven't use stuff by then, start liquidating.

Interesting topic here...as I sit in a room with shelves piled to the ceiling with models and stuff.

I second the idea of renting a second home or apartment and devoting it to war gaming, role playing games, retro arcade console gaming and your toy collection too.

just hire someone to dig you a basement, then you have storage space, and with the proper decorations can pretend your a supervillian

I'm currently working abroad, so most of my stuff is in storage.
I'm actually thinking of getting a larger locker and shelving it.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

It is of paramount importance to have a climate controlled unit. I recommend one that does not have outside access to the unit, such as a garage style door. Floods and such have never been a great concern of mine, as I would not choose a storage facility that is likely to be flooded. I would caution the use of totally sealed containers as there can be condensation inside the box caused by changes in temperature. (There are such changes even in the climate controlled units that I have used.) Covering the boxes with a tarp is a good idea, just encase someone sets off the sprinkler system. It is also good for the unit to be near to where you live.

I pay around 13USD per year per 6 cubic feet of storage space. You can store 250 figures per cubic foot. The cost of storing the figures amounts of less than one cent per figure per year.

Where are you buying this storage space?

Every storage unit I've seen sells a 5x5 space as the minimum size, unsure on the height of the unit, and it's a minimum of ~50 usd per month.

Regardless of the cents per figure, you cant buy "6 cubic feet" of space and only pay for that. You pay for 5x5, or larger. 50 usd per month is 600 per year. If all you plan to store is figures/that is your reason, those figures are costing you 600 per year, to store.

Your example is misleading, as it would only apply in reality if you already owned a storage locker for another purpose, and so these were just taking up a minimal amount of space within the unit. Also, how the heck are you fitting 250 figures per cubic foot? With foam, variable sizes, and packing arrangement, I think the number is going to be far less.

I did not mean to mislead with my previous post. I am renting much more than 6 cubic feet. I was just stating the price I pay per six cubic feet, as storage facilities charge per square foot and the room is at least six feet high. The price varies based on how much you rent. Your example of a 5x5 for 50 amounts to 2 per sq ft per month. I assume that if you looking such storage you have lots of figures.

I store my figures on magnetized metal trays. I stack the trays with spacers and put them in cardboard boxes. I can fit far more than 250 per square foot. I thought that I was giving a conservative estimate. So lets look at it again. A standard piece of GW foam fits 28 figures in the space of a square foot and is an inch and a half tall. You can stack at least 7 in a foot. Thus you will get 196 figures per cubic foot.

Taking into account paying 2 USD per 6 cubic feet foot per month and 196 figures per cubic foot then you will be paying about 2 cents to store each figure per year.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, malf. Polonius might be onto something. Put the 40k/fantasy stuff in storage, if you haven't used it in a set time limit (1-2 years?) then let it go? Seems like you're all about Warmachine now, which is awesome! But you might be able to trim the fat on the warhams sometime in the future.

I have decided that I don't want to sell models I've assembled and painted myself... I just don't have time to do it again. I don't mind selling things I didn't invest in in that way, but that's irreplacable for me. However, in your case I think you might have become a bit of an exception to the rule! Putting it into storage is probably a good first step to getting rid of the clutter that you really don't need around... selling it may be the last step (and think of all the WM/H stuff you can buy with the proceeds!!! Oh, wait, that's even More miniatures... )

Or maybe get rid of some of the socks?

I guess. However, I love the visual of a completed 40k/Fantasy army, so
I'm determined to fully complete one at some point in time.

Who knows when that might be.

Just lay out all your trollbloods in one shot (which I believe you've done already, if I remember from your P&M blog) and change the label

Although, I know what you mean. The blocks of troops for fantasy just have a different feel about them... more epic in a sense. I imagine the same is true for 40k (I'm just starting a project for it, while I keep working on my own trollbloods).

I have the same problem, way to much WH40K stuff. Stored it in an unused room at my moms house as I moved and got married, returned a few months latter to pick up my stuff and found out. 2 floods latter, my brother moving everything out of said room and leaving on the back patio for the summer. Then the boxes were so deteriated that they crushed each other, lost all my 1980's trophy's from WH40K as well as hand made buildings for terrain. $1,000's of dollars lost as I cried opening each and every box, not to mention loosing several 40K armies 4,000 pts in an all Eldar Guardian force, 5,000 Crimson Fist force and my entire Britonian/Impire fantasy army about 8,000 pts all painted. This room was locked when I left, the flooding only ruined books and comics, the rest was ransacked by my older brother who had no idea what it was. Last time I rely on good ol mom for storage. Atleast I found my old RT Dwarf army

Chaos rules you all drool! Blood for the Blood God!
10,000 pts Black Legion
2,000 pts Traitor Catchian Guard (1067th).
8,000 point Sam Hain Eldar.
2,000 pts Squat Biker Force.
1,500 Orc Hoard (painting for a friend).

Brisbane/Australia

Yes - due to the size of my Titan/s and 40K collection - whenever I Move from one place to another, I invariably have to rent two rooms in the new Abode. This is quite expensive, but the one time I DIDN'T do this, there were Floods in Brisbane - and every one of my Minis drowned in the Garage.

I had to basically rebuild my Emperor Titams feet, perform a crapload of repairs and such., and am still finding mould spots on stuff...

That being said, a friend lives in Ipswich (A town near Brisbane - Insaniak lives out that way also - BTW) and even though he has a MASSIVE room for displaying, working on Models - his house ended up being 2 Meters under water. Imagine if you will - what 40K+ Points of Tau, 60K of Chaos, Multiple Titans and FW stuff being thrown into tubs, as the water was literally rising over thier knees.

And no - they didn't save all of it by a long shot. Bugger!
