In this climate, why would you leave a government job? I know the work is horrible, but the fact you get good healthcare and a pension as well as reasonable pay so on and so forth?
Bit greedy really.
Then again I'm assistant venue manager at the biggest non arena venue outside of London in the UK and love my job for the awesome wage, however, there aren't many people in the world who can do what I do... So my worth is paid for.

It's not all doom and gloom people, I have been negotiating a change of job this week that will gain me a rise of more than the GW job is worth if it comes off.
There's much out there if you are prepared to search and aren't a media studies grad!

Because after 12 years I've been transferred from IT helpdesk, which I'm good at and trained for, to collecting debt for the Child Support Agency! I don't want to spend my life having people just swear at me all day. Every call is an abusive call and I can't handle it. But I'm in a high unemployment area in the Midlands. My options are limited, but I am quitting the civil service if I have to sell my house and live in my car! IT IS THAT BAD!

There are good paying jobs out there but not everyone can do them - same as everywhere. Anyone can work in retail so the wages reflect that.

On the plus side at least you wont pay too much tax on 14k, it seems quite a reasonable amount for working in a shop tho, how does it compare to working in other highstreet shops?
The job market in the UK is not all bad, I work in the engineering sector and its very easy to find a job. I would strongly urge anyone considering thier career options at school or college to go for any kind of engineering.

I wouldn't...
The influx of people going in to industries like that a few years ago is the reason a lot of young people are out of work (plumbing, carpentry, electricians).
Best thing if you're interested in engineering is apprenticeships with big companies, Cummings and Alstom are always running them.
The only real recommendation is to go to uni, get a degree in something that further down the line is still applicable to being a teacher, teaching is the easiest place to find a job.

Commuting is gak-expensive in the UK.
To OP: 14k sure ain't worth rolling out of bed for, IMHO.

Wow, that's nuts! No wonder there was a mass migration from Poland to England a few years back if that's the case! (note: not a racial dig, just a wow moment!)
Well I've decided to apply for the job, its not much of a pay cut, maybe £30 or so, but because I've been working with the family business, my gaffers said that I'll still be able to earn on the side by doing bits at home when I want (and its not hard work so that's no biggy!)
Application has gone over this afternoon, just in the nick of time before cut off tonight, wish me luck!

Is it uncommon to have a roommate, or two, in the UK to split the rent and everything else?

Most people house share or flat share because its so expensive to run your own place.
I have my own place because friends moved out to live with partners, but I'd much prefer to be saving a few squid.
Britain and Germany are the only countries in the world with no actual slums, we have it pretty good with quality of life, we just life in a complaining culture.

I split the costs on a cheap flat with a friend while we were both on minimum wage a few years ago. Now that I'm on a respectable salary I've just bought my own place, but getting a mortgage was still an absolute nightmare. I don't envy anyone trying to get a mortgage while making under 20k, or with any commitments like debt, kids, etc.
