For me to build the 2k point IG army I want... I'm looking at least $1,100~
It's a bloody expensive army lol
Think I may start out with grey knights inquisitor/henchmen army to get started to make it a bit easier (and I can use my GK's to fill the gaps / points)
Thing is im always looking for cheaper alternatives, like buying 2x http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440249a&prodId=prod1400022 vs 1x http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440249a&prodId=prod2070014
It will save me about $10 for each squad and I can buy the melta/plasma kits off of forgeworld.
With the henchmen , im trying to find an adaquete proxy/"counts as" for death cult assassins, cause I dont wanna spend $18CAD on two models.

I'm about done with my Ork horde. I drew a line across where i was willing to go, and i'm just about there My money pit is down to coppers..
I strongly ocnsidered collecting a DKOK force, but i can't justify the expense, even with the gorgeous models...

Well I collect ork, not a horde army but my final list is going to include ~60 boyz, 7 burnas and 7 stormboyz with loads of vehicles (10+). Good thing with orks is that they come with lots bitz and after you bough like 3-4 boxes you start to have bitz for completely new models. I have actually only bought one box of boyz (which I made into kommandos) and I have 40+ built and enough parts for ~25. My final esimate for total used money is about 300€ which includes extra stuff like plastic card and gs. I have bought aobr, boyz box, box of savage orks, 2 box of burnas, 3 trukks, battlewagon, 1/35 russian apc, 2 1/35 cars (ford and honda), zagstrukk, snikkrot, kff mek, toy cars, battleforce and loads of plastic card amd galeforce tube of gs.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

Step 1: Get a job
Step 2: Buy from a discount dealer, such as Waylandgames.co.uk
Step 3: Only buy when you have extra money. Taxes and bills come before toy soldiers.

Step 1 is good advice to anyone who's unemployed.
Step 2 is the best. Abide by it the most.
Step 3 is incomprehensible. NOTHING comes before toy soldiers.

If you can get hold of surplus laspistols/CCWs to model sargeants, the £5 boxes do help a lot actually. A squad for £10 is not to be sniffed at.

How to do a horde army without going broke?
It takes time.
My guard army (180 infantry at present) was started in 1995.
I only got around to getting the last platoon of them last year.
It was collected in dribs and drabs of mostly 2nd hand 'cast-offs' and victims of 'new shiny' syndrome. Generally cost me around $20 for 30 models (instead of the $35-40 for 10).
I've still got to get around to assembling and painting the rest of them.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Ebay is a good place to get stuff for cheap. People buy and sell off armies worth of minis all the time. I am one of those people. In the past I have built 3 different IG armies that all got sold off on ebay as individual built units, but necessarily painted. I really enjoy the modeling part of the hobby and once I've got an army built if I don't get to play it soon it gets sold to raise money for my next army.
Horder armies are not cheap by any means, especially if you pay retail. So the biggest way to lower costs is to not pay retail. I also order from thewarstore.net a lot too. They offer GW plastics at 20% off, but you have to email or call in your order as they are not allowed to have GW products in online shopping carts thanks to threats of GW lawsuits. They are great people and stuff ships pretty quickly from them.
There are also the alternatives that you have mentioned. The only thing with grabbing 28mm historicals for cheaper is that often they will look like young teens on the table next to the GW figs, as they are true 28mm with proper figure dimensions and not the uber heroic, even normal IG troopers, that GW makes. Wargames Factory did come out with a set of plastics that are "sci-fi" soldiers that are the right make up for GW troops size wise. I tried to use their British colonials and they didn't cut it in the least.
Ebay is the best place to look in my book. Just be aware of what you are buying so you don't over pay for anything and make sure you buy things that have proper pictures of what you are getting.

Buy your stuff second hand. I got my whole nid army - the MC and HQ for something like $150 and its got over 100 gaunts and 20 genestealers. yes some stuff will be broken and painting/striping models is annoying but it saves money

Here's some awesome sci-fi greatcoat troopers I found recently. Basically a cross between Helghast and DKok from the looks of it, and they're pretty cheap too! Roughly $20 for 18 guys, with multi poseable parts and weapons. This might be an option for a guy who wants to make unique armies, or just wants some cheap Stormtroopers.

Do you guys think buying kits like this that are 3rd party brands and just buying GW weapons/bits is a good idea? Or do you think they'd be more trouble than they're worth?
Welp, great minds etc... this is exactly what I did. Sourced tons of Cadian lasgun armsets and purchased spare HW team bits off the swap shop and Bartertown..
