I find it very difficult to deviate from fluff. My armies *never* violate it as far as I am aware. I definitely feel bound by it.

Living Saints seemed a bit more of an 'eeeh' issue to me. But if it's a toss up between painting the Saint like Order of Our Martyred Lady or Saint Celestine, I know which I prefer out of those two

Though I did consider painting the Saint like the Order of the Bloody Rose.

I think it's the misguided impression that there actually is any sort of consistency within the 40k franchise as a whole. I fell for that trap myself, proclaiming strict adherence to the official material as the way to go, as I believe in the value of a "common ground" - before noticing the glaring contradictions throughout the material and reading Gav Thorpe's statement on the subject of "different interpretations".

So, in short - yeah, go nuts. Personally, I'll continue to stick to studio fluff, but I have come to accept, respect and at times even encourage other people's alternate/deviating backgrounds in the spirit of creativity and plain ole' fun. I've certainly seen some amazing ideas and conversions over the time.

Chapter colors are a different thing for me with space marines as it is a simple concept of "don't want to paint yellow then don't make your marines Imperial Fists" kind of thing. I just think back to 2nd edition 40k where so many things had crazy looking bright colors on *everything* like bright blue ultramarines with bright red bolters.

Of course it does all come back to, just as someone is perfectly allowed to paint their stuff in some crazy scheme like the necrons with butterflies on it, you are just as allowed to paint yours based on specific fluff and what you consider "proper". That is the best part about it. You can paint what ya feel no matter what.
