But see, that depends entirely on your perspective.
Apologies for playing Devil's Advocate here - I'm used to criticizing organized religion myself - but non-religious causes can be "wrong" as well (again: Nazi-Germany), and religious causes can (in theory) thus also be more good than secular ones. At the end of the day I'm inclined to say the human mind just longs for something to believe in. This doesn't have to be a religion, but he is perfectly able to commit himself to a non-religious cause with the same amount of fanaticism.
Unit1126PLL wrote:Martyring oneself for a cause that is wrong is irrelevant in the course of history.
I'm pretty sure that religions have played a major role throughout history. Just because something is wrong it doesn't become irrelevant. Would be nice if that were the case!
Unit1126PLL wrote:"Religions" which don't believe in the supernatural are called philosophies.
Well, Buddhism is apparently called both.

Technically, Ollianius Pius is not a GUARDSmen, as the Imperial Guard didn't exist at the time, but other then that is is pretty much the greatest badarse ever to exist.
Lest we forget Gunner Ferik Jurgen though, who was instrumental in stopping a genestealer invasion, an Ork Waagh!, a chaos invasion and foiling the diabolical scheme of a radical inquisitor.

Tried to fix the image for you but it doesnt seem to be working. Have to admit though, I think this shows off Creed's Genius much better.
Although this would be a close second place as well, honestly with Creed, we could post pics all day, but we'd never get anything done. I gotta give it to Pius though, it takes some serious balls to stand up to the physical manifestation of hell with nothing but a flashlight and a t shirt and say "You know what, you, if you want to kill the emperor you'll have to get through me!" He's the example every guardsmen has tried to emulate in the past 10,000 years of the emperium. It doesnt matter how hard GW tries to retcon him, he's so badass that I doubt he'll ever truly disappear.
