My most extreme case of extreme numbers was playing the roleplaying game, er, something_law. Anyway, it had tables and tables and tables and tables. We made 2 characters and spent literally about 3 hours designing them. Just their copious stats. The first fight I got into was with some "choir boys." Basically just garbage dudes I should smear. Well one rolled onto one table to another table to another. I was instantly killed. It was an arrow shot and I remember the line was, "use a spatula," because my spine had been shattered.

Extremes like that can lead to really crazy frustration. When I gamble I play Baccarat, where the house only has about a 1% advantage. No, I won't make a killing or some 300:1 odds. But I can sit there for a long time getting free drinks.

The To Hit table capped at 3+/5+ in 7th, too. And further back? I think so.

And that is an extreme case of random stupid. Role-playing games are a bad place to have that kind of thing, unless character creation is quick and you're okay with making a lot of them or something. One of my mantras is "the best way to simulate chance is to remove chance", and that's how I play those games.

Well the small bell curve of chance allows for more strategy, lass random games, and less people throwing their dice against the wall and upsetting the table because the guy rolled 6/6/6/6/6 and not only does the spell cast, but he gets to take your models and literally step on them in real life.
