The IoM and the Eldar can have peaceful enough relations, as long as enough is at state. I sort of developed an Eldar Farseer in my own fluff who was quite instrumental in saving an Imperial world, and she only did that due to that a guy saved her life from the Nids a few times.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

They never had anything but a cordial relationship. First of all, the guy is happily married, secondly wifey wields a longlas, third he is a bigot, fourth she only found him mildly attractive and fifth an Ordo Xenos Inquisitor were hovering nearby, and eventually an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor entered the planet as well. So the poor commissar really had to negotiate between the differencing parties while avoiding either turning on each other while they saved the planet. But that was a deviation from the point.

At least in my fluff the Eldar can be trusted if something of them are at stake, the IoM is their shield for the really big bad. The Orks for them, while the Eldar is better at fighting the Nids than the humans.

Also there are instances of trade between them, and some Imperial nobles rides around in grav-vehicles of Eldar origin.

Only Rogue Traders are sanctioned for trade with the Eldar, and then only with certain goods...

The Tau derail gun is taking aim! It hasn't fired yet we still have a chance...

I think the imperium would respect the eldars abilities in combat and their will to live. Though they will never respect what they are. Although who can blame them? Eldar alliances are fickle at best. If there is the slightest chance they can beat their "ally" they will take it.

Vice-versa also: the senior Eldar have a wary respect for the Imperium's iron fist and recognize it's determination to fight the Great Enemy, although they won't accept Mankind as it is. To paraphrase you: Although who can blame them? Humans are erratic at best. If there is the slightest chance they can beat their "ally" they will take it.

Honestly, beyond the general contempt the Eldar have for all the younger races that want their blood, I really don't think they take much issue with the Imperium. It's just that when it comes down to the lives of an Eldar vs. the lives of a human, the Eldar are pragmatic to a fault. As we've all heard a thousand times, they will gladly toss an entire planet of humans to the wolves if it means saving one Eldar life. But that's true for all the races, really.

I wonder how the Eldar feel about the Tau.

Personally speaking the apt conception of a typical human is he is dull, and witless with no direction and prone to making mistakes (think a mother and a child). Humanity has a devastatingly huge impact upon Chaos and their interference could jeopardize ages of planning to deal with the endless threats every Eldar is aware of as opposed to the ignorant masses (save inquisitors and the like). Space marines hold a dogma in the mind of a typical Eldar only they prove more useful or dangerous to them... think a monster with the mind of a child. To them they are not new players on their chess match anymore but they are just smart enough to see problem but far too dumb to fix them more than likely they will ruin everything in the name of the creeds.

But likewise The average imperial citizen views the Eldar as vile traitors and pirates at best as they have powerful tech but send no diplomats nor do they bow to the emperor. This again comes to the same analogy as a child being mad you don't like his friends. He doesn't care why he just wants you to be part of his group you see? I would say if anything the Eldar appear to most military as dangerous enough that you shouldn't 'want' to tangle with them because they will not only take it personally they will probably take as many of you with them as possible if backed into a corner.

Ultimately the main problem is people vs. mobs. The Mob hates the eldar because of the basic creeds of the Imperium, popular opinion and accounts of the past. Mobs hate the Imperium for their foolish mistakes, their endless requests for submission and obedience as well as they constant turns to chaos. While Heroic individuals, war veterans and heretical/reasonable people with some modicum of power on both sides recognize the finer points of each race. The Eldar bring wisdom that is beyond the scope of intelligence, they are the sole reason plasma weaponry was created, and proven themselves potent and driven people. While in the eyes of certain Autarch's we see them recognizing the numbers, strength and perseverance of the IOM.

Sadly no amount of trust isn't subject to betrayal in with a galaxy at constant war no alliance however fruitful will ever truly last without one side completely submitting which ultimately i think all sides agree will never happen.

And besides "Orks is best!"

Naive and ignorant.
Maybe, though they seem to have a certain amount of respect for them over all the other races. Here's a nifty quote from Eldrad I found from the Tau codex:

I have followed the myriad potential futures of the Tau with great interest. Though barely even striplings compared to us, I feel a strange protectiveness towards them. In time I believe they will exceed even our greatest feats and master the darkness within their souls.

Honestly, that's about the most positive thing I have ever heard an Eldar say about a non-Eldar.

Eldar (and Tau for that matter) to the normal Imperial Trooper (space marine or Guardsmen) xenos are more respected as ready made grease for a Tank's treads as far as i know.

The higher ups in Imperial command have a mutual respect for them as skilled opponents but not so much after that.

Is it necessarily humanity as a whole though? I could see a guard force trying to make an alliance last as long as possible. Where as a space marine force would want to wipe clean the xenos "filth" as soon as an opportunity presented itself.

I remember reading about the eldars alliances being fickle, there was no specification of a craft world.... just eldar in general.

Humans think all Eldar are fickle. It just goes to show humanities own arrogance and misunderstanding, though. The Eldar aren't fickle, they're just shady. When they ally themselves with you, they do so knowing, in advance, that they're going to kill you as soon as you're no longer useful. That's not really fickle or capricious, because they never felt any sort of endearing quality toward you in the first place.

I think it confuses the Imperium because humans tend to be more "honorable". When we forge an alliance with someone against a mutual enemy, it usually inadvertently creates a grudging respect for the person we ally with, even if we were enemies before hand. The Eldar are above such things.
