No, actually, ultramarine looks like this:

(…depending on your screen of course. It's a pretty light and purply blue).

Synthetic ultramarine, on the other hand:

Haha, fair enough, but GW's own blue of the same name was (I think they've changed it now?) much more purple in color...

Nurgle- Comes from Nergal a Babylonian god of the underworld, death, and diseases. Not generally seen as a pleasant chap but one of the higher up gods when it came to death. His title Lord of the Flies comes from Beelzebub, another name for Satan which translates to Lord of the Flies.

Epidimius- Comes from epidemic, an apt name as one who's job is to spread plagues

Korne- Comes from another Babylonian god, also named Khorne though several spellings exist, who was a god of vengeance.

Horus- Taken from the Egyptian god Horus, though I cannot find where the similarities may continue from there. Some sources say that Horus was a god of war but beyond that, the two seem radically different.

Abaddon the Despoiler- Comes from the book of Revelations, Abaddon the Destroyer is the name of the angel of the pit who unleashes onto the world a swarm of terrible insects to torment mankind.

Necrons
Imotekh- Imhotep was an ancient Egyptian architect, considered to be one of if not the first, as well as an engineer and physician.

Orikan the Diviner- Orikan most likely comes from oracle, a profession which he embodies by telling the future and always making sure that it is correct.

Marbo- Rambo...duh

Well... If my Year 3 Egyptian mythology is correct, didn't Horus betray the head god, his brother or something like that?

Thank you, I knew I got my gods mixed up.

Actually that's not true. The original translation for Satan from old Hebrew is roughly "accuser". Lord of the Flies is a title attributed to Satan however, mainly because all the Devils in the Old Testament and Bible and other Canon tend to get lumped into one entity (http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02388c.htm is not a bad source on info regarding the title).

Apocryphally, Satan was a title for an Angel as well whose duty was to judge the worthiness of man. Interestingly enough (and no offense to any Christians is intended so don't take it personally) in that apocrypha it seems Satan being Satan is just his job and its later works that vilify Satan. But then Apocrypha is Apocrypha because the Church doesn't approve of it.

Castiel wrote:Blood Angels are not associated with Hell, the names come from Archangels, eg Raphael and from Renaissance Italy

Blood Angels are very much associated with Hell and Heaven. Specifically the Italian literature/themes/ideals about it. Dante is definitely not an Archangel or Angel of any kind.

  • Space Wolves : Nordic mythology, e.g. Loki, the Trickster God.

  • Spacewolves isn't just mythology. Ragnar for instance, was a Swedish Viking King who torched france twice over, captured Paris and forced the king to bribe him out of destroying the entire city. Because he was awesome like that.

Indeed. Nordic/Norwegian names and the like are very common and fit the theme. Some Visigothic names fit as well. Names such as Liuvigild, Alaric, Fritigern, Sigeric and so on aren't totally out of place.

I apologize if the way I was phrasing this was unclear. I meant to say that Beelzebub, not Satan, was what was translated

Eldar craftworlds I'd be fairly certain being named after seasons/months in Gaelic

Saim Hann - Samhain - a Celtic festical
Lugganath - Lunasa - the month of August
Biel Tan - Bealtaine - the month of May
This one was news to me
Iybraesil is a largely matriarchal society. As followers of Morai-Heg, the Iybraesil Eldar constantly aspire to recover the hidden secrets of the crone worlds, the original homeworlds of the Eldar race which now reside in the Eye of Terror. The colour of Iybraesil is blue accompanied by white. Its name is a variant of Hy-Brazil, a mythical island from Irish folklore.

Ah yes, I forgot about those. Almost everything Eldar-ish seems Gaelic, including the majority of their quotes on Lexicanum. Though the island was actually called Brasil, there's no z in Irish.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.
