Insurgency Walker wrote:The problem is that the meta story, if you will, is tthat America's loose firearms laws aids lawless behavior in Mexico. This is a stance that both governments have been bouncing around for years. As Ouze pointed out, the national press doesn't want to really dig into the story in a way that will interfere with the desired meta story. From the discriptions of weapons seized most of the hardware is getting to the cartels after approved governmental sales of military hardware from the US, to Mexico governmental agencies, to include the police.
In One border town in Mexico all the police firearms were confiscated, and the police started to carry sling shots.
From an economic stand point, it makes no sence to buy an expensive american Frankenstein AK, and rebuild it as a combloc weapon that you can buy in many third world countrys for under $100 US.

I'd be willing to imagine the drug cartels have entire networks of gunsmiths working for them. You can make a sear in you basement if you have the right tools and a reference.... I know a certain company (don't remember the name) offers M60 machine guns in a semi-automatic function, mainly just for people who want to feel like badasses (or collectors, I guess). They completely reworked the internals so that it should be physically impossible to modify them to fire in full auto. Obviously, that can't be done with every gun, but it seems like if the US really cared about making it hard for people to get their hands on full auto guns, they would at least make it a little bit harder to modify legally purchased guns that manage to sneak across the border (I don't know how they'd do this, since dozens of companies sell AR platforms).

They don'thave to. They can buy them from the Mexican military, Venezuela, Cuba, etc. etc.
