Guns as a hobby is also pretty pricey:
- $500 SIG p226('Classic .22')
- $125 Marlin 795
- $535 Glock 19
- $11(50 rds of brass 9mm 115gr FMJ)
- $7(100 rds of high-velocity .22LR round-nose)
I'm toying with the idea of an AR-15 in the future(~$600 for an 'entry-level' AR-15), and God alone knows how much money I would burn on accessories in that case.
I used to shoot every week at an indoor range, usually around 150 rounds of 9mm and 50 rounds of .22LR.
Lastly, there's the range fees, the cost of targets, and cleaning supplies.

I'd consider collecting guns, but I would probably run out of things to buy after getting an AR-15 SP1 (Hell, I'd be fine with an A1 stock and repro a1 handguards on a springfield m16a2) and government model 1911(springfield too). Not big on guns that shoot great or are practical. Just into looks really.

If you want 'cool' looking and cheap to shoot, look at some of the .22s out there. I have one of these for plinking:
http://www.colt22rimfire.com/index.php?page=colt-m4-ops
You can get .22s that look like HK MP5s, AKs, and others. They are usually between 150-300 bucks and .22 ammo is dirt cheap. Automatically Appended Next Post: Heck, they make a "45" in .22 too!

Then add in the swag like different guns, K-Bar, BB's, playing fee ( $20 bucks per day) lunch, gas money it all adds up fast. But what a freaking blast it was so much fun especially when doing milsims.

I'm starting to think that airsoft is pretty dumb, myself. Especially when I can shoot guns basically whenever I have time and they have ammunition in the Navy
I know that Marine Corps uses milsim bullets, because my dad has about a dozen stories of getting hit with them That sounds like fun.

Dunno about 'tacti-cool' .22LR-chambered guns...seems like they might reliability problems, but that's just my assumption(actually, I think the Mossberg 'Tactical .22' is pretty decent).
Seems like you may as well spend a bit more on the weapon and ammo and have the real thing.

Can't have automatic weapons in Canada. Semi only no burst firing either. =o[ C-7 is military issue and highly ill-legal in Canada. Hand guns are even worse. The only thing they really leave alone are 'long rifles'. They just repealed the bill that they passed 5-6 years ago that you had to regisiter the long guns.
As I said before the only one with automatic guns are the crooks and the Emergency Responce Teams aka SWAT outside of the military. =o[
I REALLY REALLY envy you Americans and the Second Amendment. But as Canada's laws are based on British common law, what do you expect.
Then again two weeks ago I was firing off a MG42, SKS and a modified AR to fire 3 round burst. If we where to get caught we would be facing jail time. =o[

I've put over 1000 rounds through my .22 M4 with no problems, and spent less than 1/4 of what I would have for a GOOD AR and way less than half the ammo. Heck, I get 500 .22 rounds for under 25 bucks.

Interesting...plus, you can use it in indoor pistol lanes.

Shooting is a lot more expensive than it used to be. If you shoot anything besides .22s or military surplus 5.45,7.62x39, or 7.62x54R. Depending on what you shoot its can be 12.5 cents per round(.223) to .25 cents a round( cheap .308). I know some guys that shoot 50 BMG, and .338 Lapua that can cost upwards of a 1.25 a round :O Know that may not seem like much, but when you shoot upwards of a few hundred rounds during practice it adds up quick

I started to collect guns and I plan to eventually collect most WW2 era main weapons. The MP40 is a main weapon, the panzershreck not so much, but still awesome. I did find that it was easy to start Russian because they mass produced the hell out of everything and then later took it all back as surplus. A nice little 1895 dual action Nagant revolver( double action was the officer's edition stamped in 1937) for about $150 and $100 for a 91/30 Nagant that was made around 1943. The $100 included shipping, transfer fee, and sales tax but it came with a care kit from surplus and a bayonet. Then I bought some surplus ammo for $100, it comes in a nice wooden box with two metal cases on the inside containing the ammo and a can opener. Managed to find a nice little "Guard" emblem too so it will eventually go with them as a nice little display thing.
I will probably start German next, depending on what is available next and what prices I can find for a Kar98 vs a M1 Garand.
As far as helmets go, I don't know how to feel about them because for some reason I feel some bad mojo coming from them. Which is weird, I'm perfectly fine with owning a weapon that potentially executed political dissidents but not with a helmet that someone potentially wore and potentially was being worn when said person was killed.

The best part is that the ammo is DIRT CHEAP. You can have tons of fun with .22s for a good price.
Seriously a box of ammo with 500 rounds will run you around $15- $20.

Oh yeah, I forgot food. Jesus, my training regimen has me eating 3500-4000 calories a day in order to maintain weight, which works out to about 4-500 USD per month. So, with shoes, clothing, gym membership, and food I spend about 9 grand a year on exercise. With rugby dues, and travel expense its probably closer to 10.

Well thats just plain odd. I can walk around the streets here in my area and I do not worry about some doped up, crazed fiend blowing me away either. Seriously the way non-US people think that we are a country of lunatics that blow people away at any time amazes me sometimes. Also I think this topic is how expensive the hobbies are - not whether they should or should not be allowed.

But not as expensive as GHQ 1:2400 Micronaughts, the kind we use for WW2 tabletop 'Victory At Sea'. I spent £30 the other day on 3 small ships & a pack of tiny u-boats. The biggest of those, the Bismarck, will be about the length of my forefinger - mind you the advantage is that once I've got the models well, that's it, I don't really need to buy more. The Kriegsmarine only had a finite number of ships, so once I have the battleship, the cruisers, the destroyers & u-boats - well, that's it.

GW is pricey but think about it. More and more people are pooring into the stores everyday. They stoped selling in Europe besides England (grrrr...) By taking those stores down and opening ones up in america. They see if a third party store is doing well with 40k products in the area then stop supplying that store with the price discount for them to buy to sell to others eventualy making said third party store close. Then they will open a GW in the same area. Wrap your head around that. The reason I know alot of this is because my best friends father owns a massive game store with like a warhammer lounge and a gamer arena. They stop supplying him and now he has to do only video games. He will be closing soon due to a gamesworkshop opening across the street from his place.

That is why I went with 1:3000. Ships are not as detailed, but when you get Gaf Spee for under 3 bucks it makes a difference. And WW2 Naval is a definite side era for me...
