Finecast will never work with spincasting...never. This (the current situation) is as good as the combo of resin and spin casting gets without designing new equipment or denser materials. However they could improve their success rate by actually looking at defects from the first few runs and re-cutting the molds as needed.

That said, they can either move to an alternate method or increase their QC sampling and eat more parts on the manufacturing floor.

BTW, I don't believe the resin is "crappy". What they're doing is using too much talc to combat voids...which it turn lowers the shear strength of the resin, makes it a lighter color and gives it a granular feel. The reason they have to over talc is because the resin is not dense enough to force itself into some air pockets...which is why resin, "as is", has never worked with spincasting at this size and detail level.

The generally accepted practice (at least outside of the computer industry) is to wait until you know how to do it properly before releasing that new product...

I'm in no hurry to purchase anything anyway, so Im happy to wait. But as I said, I dont understand why people are getting so hysterical. Big companies feth up sometimes.. Apple makes a fethed phone occasionally.. big deal. Dont buy anything till they sort it.

Hyperbole, much? The vast majority of posters aren't hysterical. Just annoyed. Given GW's billing of 'Fine'cast as the best thing ever, that annoyance really shouldn't be too confusing.

Interesting post from way back. Funny to see views prior to the Finecast launch...it also piggybacks on what I was saying above.

You mean like... GUINEA PIGS? That pretty much sums up the mentality of the type of people that are willing to accept being a white fur ball.

And still throw money at GW

Here is what normal companies do....

They come up with new concepts....
They do tests....
over and over again...
till they fix the issues or....
scrapped the project.

GW and GW fans are like the rarest specie I have ever seeing that are so masochist.

Be fair Luna, it's only some GW fans that are making such a noise about finecast.

I'll put myself in Matty's corner and say that I am willing to give them the time to work out the flaws in the manufacturing process. It is easy for me to say this when i have 3k points of WE, 2k of demons, and 1.5k of SoB to paint before i need to buy anything else though!

GW produces some of the best looking sculpts on the market, other companies are making some great stuff too but none have a similar sized range to GW. I think it's worth giving them some time to fix their crappy QA.

But they have had time to do that since last summer. You would think that by now that they would have gotten things fixed as anything over 6months is unhealthy, I wonder what their next report is going to look like?

The situation should have been dealt with already, it is almost a year now, and they still can't get their highly touted 25th year Anniversay model fixed, let alone have they fixed the issues with other models. I have had to deal with the brittleness of the Necron models,

Early Skaven Jezzails were flexible, nigh indestructible when dropped, and had a darker shade of color to the resin. Now the mix used is a much lighter gray, and that is not just talc issues, AND the material is snapping at 20 degrees, when the jezzails could be bent past 90degrees with no snapping!

>So, inconsistent mixes

>someone is asleep at the QA

>Massive bubbling and other miscast issues

>at a high cost/price which GW has also likened to the importance to your army as a past mitigating factor in the costs.

>Replacements reportedly rife with similar issues.

>QA issues have been plaguing Finecast since it's debut last year

The cynical part of my brain tells me that the high price-point of finecast was chosen simply because they expected to get a load of returns.

The logical part of my brain tells me that the price-point was just the good 'ol business practise of 'seeing what you can get away with'

Things will only get fixed when they have a financial incentive to do it..... I am happy to let the vocal minority on the interwebs do that while i paint the stuff i already have.

More like they see how far they can push as the main drive for the prices.

For my two cents on the metal versus resin front, and why GW loves to be the opposite of the market, I just saw these models released by Rebel Minis.

They do a pretty cool 15mm scifi line that is constantly tempting me to pick up two armies for my buddy and me to paint and play (50 cents a model? OK!)

http://rebelminis.blogspot.com/2012/01/vipers-available-now.html

Anyway, here's the new figure that they just released in resin. It's about 35-40mm to the top of the torso. They are releasing it at half the price it would be if in metal. Sure, it's not the detail of GW right now, but I think the comparison still fits when a company on a shoestring budget can do it.
