I have found the secret to enjoyment of this game. Play the army that makes you happy.

This happened to me too. At the start I gathered one box of Wyches and one box of Kabalite Warriors when the new DE came out because I thought they looked so great and had weapons and combat styles that were very appealing to me. But the first couple of games I played were with my partner who only had Black Reach. He took marines and so I took Orks, and we played with no transports, cover/special rules (to make things easier) and simple annihilation. Which, suffice to say, was incredibly boring, and I didn't like Orks or Marines.

We then stopped playing and my partner started to be more interested in the Orks and I carried on collecting Dark Eldar. About 8 months later we played some proper games with our preferred armies and then that was 'it'. Now I paint more than play, but am happy knowing that I took the time to collect an army that I connected with (despite it being one of the hardest for a newcomer to learn).

From purchase to first game? about 3 hours.

That includes the drive time from the store to the house.

I bought the 5th ed boxed set (marines/orks) and went home. We slapped them together with a bit of plastic glue and started playing.

From purchase to the first game played outside of the house? Around 3 years and roughly 7 "full" armies later (at least 2k points each). I have to admit, I like painting... a lot.
