You guys know that 4+ cover is the default because you don't establish what each cover is, right? In the BRB, in the section about cover saves there is a table stating what is a 3+, 4+, and 5+ cover save. In every game I have played I have used this table to justify establishing cover for each part of terrain. If my model is behind a wall then it's 4+. If my model is in a light wood then it is a 5+.

On-Topic: 3+ is not a crutch, but is like playing a video game on easy. You don't have to try the advanced techniques on the game because hitting the same button still gets the job done. That's why a player who has gotten the advanced skills is a terror with a MEQ army. Though at the same time the longer they are playing the MEQ army the more likely their advanced skill will atrophy.

I cannot agree here. The assumption that powerarmour makes you a worse player is quite difficult to prove.
Meq armies still have to stay within cover if they wish to remain alive for long. They still rely on their transports for protection.
If a codex is relatively easy to play then it is because the units and upgrades are competatively priced or even underpriced ( and do not have to pay 25 points for a fricking darklance...*cough*) for what they offer and not solely because they wear powerarmour.
Of course, if GW would finaly stop sucking and release a bunch of competative non meq books ( and no, even Dark Eldar cannot quite compete with IG, GK and Furrywolves ) instead of the ancient and therefore
underowered crap we have atm then the idea of meq armies being "easy mode" would probably go away.

Since when is IG an MEQ book?

I wouldnt say Power Armor is a "crutch" seeing as how the game is really based around it.

What I find interesting is how they develop non-power armor armies to play so differently while keeping them competitive.

My bad. I merely wished to state that no non meq book can even remotely compete with the current top three.

Again, how is IG (or Orks for that matter, seeing how well they do in the US) an MEQ army?

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.
