You can also take on vehicles with it if you need to because with ordinance you roll 2D6 for pen and take the highest one (not quite melta, but it beats just rolling one!) so your odds of penetrating go way up. Great tank, and personally I think the vanilla Russ is the best Russ.

+1

Vanilla Russ is great.

That Manticore is going to be dangerous. There really isn't all that much you are going to be able to do with that. I guess that you might need to rely on your Russ to take it out- provided your table is bigger than 48". Do you know what their lists look like?

Nothing in that necron list (even if he does take the Traveller) has better than a 3+ save, so the LRBT will deny armour saves.

Again, anti-tank is good but remember that as soon as you score 1 pen hit the barges armour ill drop to AV11, at which point Autocannons can pop it with relative ease.

He's not taking any Scarabs so your LRBT will be pretty safe providing you stay outside of RF range.

If he does take the traveller then his Immortals get a boost in CC and he gets a tachyon arrow (S10, Ap1) but that is one shot (essentially a super HK missile). So same rules apply, sit back with the LRBT and blow the crud out of the Immortals before they reach the 12" magic range (if he takes the Traveler i would guess he cant take a Phaeron which means the Immortals wont be relentless).

I have a friendly tourney comign up in June and IG is the army i am worried about the most tbh. All those pie plates can make a necrons day very miserable.

Armies:

Iron Warriors (8000 points-ish)

Pie plates?

Also, the table is 4' by 4', and I don't know they're army lists. I've been trying to cover all the bases, but honestly, my main worry for the tourney is horde armies...

You'll be fine with horde armies. Don't worry so much about that.

Pie Plates are the large blast markers. They look like pie plates when you lay it down.

Agreed. I think a normal LRBT will be a good investment against Necrons. Also, I have heavy flamers as the hull weapons on all my tanks in case I come up against Scarabs (they take extra wounds from templates).

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

My opponent isn't taking Scarabs.

Honestly, I don't get Heavy Flamers on tanks. Maybe in a Cities of Death battle, but otherwise...

And you are lucky he isn't.

As for the heavy flamers, in many instances, the only way for some armies to get through the tough AV 14 on the russ is to get into assault range of it as quickly as possibly. That's where the flamer comes in handy. Plus it ignores cover saves, which is a plus to most horde armies that don't have a good armor save to begin with.

That being said, I don't use them much either. I'd rather take the heavy bolters or lascannon myself.

Those are good points. My army is based on Cityfighting, so one day I might create a Heavy Flamer Leman Russ Demolisher. Most of the time, my tank is killed by being immobilised short of the main line and killed by grenades!!!!!

Necrons are pretty sub optimal at such low points values, don't sweat it.

That is not true anymore. Newcrons can be just as good in low points as any other codex. While neither the above necrons list or the OP IG list are optimal, IMO, the necron list is superior.

PS: HE PLAYS AGAINST MY CRONS AND GOT CREEMED ON THURSDAY!

I dont play guard but they have and will have a place in my heart for 1 reason you can fit 115 men into 600pt! (where as I can fit 23)

I have decided to drop my crons in favour of guard with voxs and mortars (will replicate ww1 creeping barrage tactic because 6 pinning blast templates is going to ruin any ones day and then I can follow that up with 126 flashlight shots!)

The Leman Russ should be a pretty good investment in a small 600 Point Army, especially against small army builds like Necrons. A 150 Point, AV14 Tank can utterly wreck Troops, and leaves some room for some better anti-Vehicle weaponry the Vanilla Russ lacks. Auto Cannons are a pretty safe bet also, its cheap in Infantry Squads and can be bought en masse without sacrificing alot of points.

I'm not a fan of Las Cannons. I prefer the Missile Launcher in my Guard Squads for the dual-purpose ammunition; krak to bust open AV12-13 armor and frag for incoming troops.

But the Leman Russ is a good buy for a 600 Point game.
