Subject: Re:The NRA doesn't only care about guns anymore.
An NRA lobbyist, Tara Mica, helped shepherd a model bill that requires voters to show a photo ID at the polls.
This statement is interesting, as it implies that the NRA is officially endorsing/supporting/funding Mica`s actions when you fit this with the rest of the article. This, particularly given when later in the article they state they don't actually have any idea whether this is the case or not, is about on par with me meeting a policeman on a firing range, getting a few pointers on how to shoot, and then a third party making the statement that his particular police department is training the citizenry how to make people dead`r.
Sound dumb to anyone yet? While it might BE true that the NRA is doing things it should not be doing (Which would piss me off and make me reconsider my membership.) to claim that to be the absolute truth on...damn near nothing...is a bit absurd.
He said the NRA's work is cut out for it, because gun ownership is on the decline in America.
Wal-mart is selling M4 clones on its website. Remington, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, SIG, and H&K are making AR15 patterns now. Firearms and ammunition are one of the few areas of the economy actually doing well. Shall issue CCW is expanding, and assault weapons ban challenges are in the works right now in IL and CA. U mad bro?
Josh Horwitz heads an advocacy group called the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. He said the NRA's role with ALEC cements his view that the NRA is really a base for the conservative movement.
This just in: Head of group on the anti-side of an argument thinks pro- side group is doing something shifty, based on guilt-by-association. News at 11.
If I want my money to go towards requiring voter registration,
Didja happen to fill out a small extra bit of paperwork at some point (Most likely at the DMV when procuring a drivers license) with a header reading "Voter Registration"? I'm going out on a limb here and saying that the vast majority of us who vote did. I'm also going to go out on a limb and note that it's probably NOT OK for you to vote in your state unless you did so. That fight is long over, and I have no problem at THIS POINT with them verifying my ID against information already on file.
In many (most?) states getting photo ID does actually cost money and take time.
24 dollars, last time I had it done. That's 8 rides on the bus where I'm at, or a months bus pass. Or two meals eating out (Or so.) It took all of a day to get the necessary paperwork together and get down to the DMV, and while yes it WAS The DMV (And so it sucks.) I wasn't taking the ring to mount Doom either. Please.

It sounds like you're making a pretty compelling argument against strengthened vote ID laws. For a single mother with kids, it's likely she also has to factor in the cost of a babysitter if it's a weekend, or, much more likely, a day's worth of lost wages since many DMV's are only open business hours Monday through Friday. For people who are already poor this is a pretty tough proposition.
I am fascinated by this conservative push to increase the size of government to handle all these new ID's at taxpayer expense, issue onerous new regulations, and put significant artificial impediments to personal freedom to combat a problem that pretty much both sides agree is nearly nonexistant. Why not propose a rule that states every citizen must install, at their own expense, a lightning rod to protect themselves from the heavens? Citizens are killed by lightning strikes with about same frequency they commit actual voter fraud in the US. The party of small government, indeed.

Or she takes a half day, leaves the kids with her mother/sister/best friend for a few hours after getting the paperwork together over a weekend. By the way, interesting job this woman must have, having gotten it without first having some sort of ID...been pretty standard requirement from what i've experienced aside from a do it yourself business or being paid off the books.
Now, don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of the ID happiness of american society. I'm not. But telling me that some 80 year old paraplegic single mother going for their masters degree is being unfairly stepped on because they have to present at the ballot box the same ID (From the same place as the ones that hands out the voter reg forms that they filled out beforehand) that they used to secure a job, an apartment, a bank account, a vehicle, their prescriptions, or even food if they pay by plastic....doesn't have much of an impact, in light of the bigger picture.
The whole situation is ridiculous, but the anti-voter ID crowd has thus far had just a bit more hilarity and a bit less sense as far as I am concerned.

(EDITED BY FRAZZLED) On the flip side, this is a primarily an issue for NRA's membership. WHile others are free to comment, unless you're amember of the NRA you're just a cheese eating surrender monkey. Cheese eating surrender monkeys - can go eat some cheese and surrender to someone. A quick google search can point you to the nearest German embassy, which will take your surrender. And remember, knowing is half the battle!
On the positive I saw a car at a party yesterday. Instead of the usal icons of spouses, kids, and pets they were...zombies. EXCELLENT!

Au contraire, Monsieur Frazzled. It is you who has no right to comment on the comments made about the NRA by Europeans who aren't members, because you are not a non-member European.

Good thing the thread was started by an NRA member. Otherwise Fraz says we're not allowed to talk about it.

Au contraire Kilkrazy. It is you who has no right to comment on my comment on the comment by Europeans who aren't members about NRA comments from its members because oh wait I forgot, what were we talking about?
I just want to see some people showing up at the German Embassy or a random VW Passat, offering to surrender. "Was ist zis?"

No, I'm merely saying its up to their membership to decide what they want to do with their VAST treasury. What should be talked about is not how they spend it, but how much they blow it sending me junk mail. NO I DON"T FREAKING WANT CAR INSURANCE I WANT A TOMMY GUN! AND NO I DON"T BELIEVE YOU THAT THE KIMBER SOLO IS THEBEST GUN EVAH WHEN REPORTS SHOW HALF OF THEM ARE BROKEN OUT THE BOX! (rant off). I'll check to make sure my post was clear.
Alternatively you can surrender to a BMW. You can't surrender to a Porsche, because they are still in mourning from the loss and Pappy Ferdinand. Unfortunately now all the talk of cheese eating has me hungry for breakfast...Oh bacon, you are my master. COMMAND ME!!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Actually if you look at the article all the NRA is saying is that they shared some lobbyists. Much more detail on the gun websites. NRA members are freaking out, noting that its a group for guns and only guns, not other causes. this should get interesting. I'll check the NRA site itself when I am off work.

But you're ardently defending it, nonetheless. Maybe you just like arguing? I could understand that, I do it all the time, true story. I just think that disenfranchising an American citizen's right to participate in their government, a right so many of our predecessors fought bled and died for, should require a more compelling government interest then what has been presented thusfar, to solve a problem that hasn't really needed fixing for nearly 240 years. When the nation has such a low voting rate I don't know if throwing more wholly artificial roadblocks in the way is the direction we want to go in. I'm ignoring the fact that it's almost completely Republicans pushing for these measures, and the utterly coincidental fact that the disenfranchised voters will be mostly from a competing voting bloc, because I'd never assign bad faith to Republicans.
So do you support my proposed law to mandate every American install a lightning rod? Sure, it's at your own expense, and it will take a few hours but it will prevent, like, 15 or so fatalities a year. All you have to do is take a day off work and stop by the Department of Lightning Rods to buy one, and make sure it complies with all the federal regulations we'll publish on lightning rods. Don't you care about people getting killed by lightning?
Afterwards, I intend to mandate every American buy shark repellant.

Well in his defense, I think anyone posting in the OT likes to argue, or more precisely rant.

I've said it before but I'll say it again, I'd vote for this guy, just for the beard.
