I pretty much pick up my dice and a model or two or something to represent a unit / vehicle / model and just roll to check out odds.

It really is just way too much hassle to set up more then just 4 / 5 models and any terrain other then a coffee cup or book.

I am not sure Vassal is to blame for that.

I play against myself all the time (presents me with a muched loved challenge when I play skilled players).

I only play myself because, I harldy can get a game in with my orkz, so I have them rebel agaisnt themselves, bring out my Imperial Guard, Eldar, or Dad's Space Marines.

I rarely play with myself, personally. Busy schedule aside, honestly I just usually can't be bothered to go through the whole process - spend an hour putting together two lists, setting up both armies, getting the table ready, picking out a mission to try out, etc. Then after that I have to spend a good 2, 2 and a half hours playing a game, which while fun forces me to focus on two separate forces, bending over to move things around, figuring out whose turn it is if the game gets interrupted (it happens surprisingly often), keeping track of the score...and after all that, I have to pack everything away, alone.

Honestly, I find that it's not worth the effort. Playing a round of 40k is fun, but there's a lot of work that, in a normal game, is equally shared between both players. It's just such a major pain to do all of it alone just to play a game.

I dont know if anyone has suggested this but try Vassal40k! Its 24/7 online games if you have access and there is usually people looking for games.

I think a title more suitable would be "Do you play against yourself?"

But yes, I did play against my self on a number of occasions in the past. It was great for me to learn the game, make embarrassing mistakes that my non existant wouldn't see, and pass the time.

It also helped me try out a couple of tactics like the slingshot manoeuvre using an IC, without me screwing up a game against a real opponent. That being said I don't really think that's a good substitute for playing against a real opponent.
