Maybe but playing with Soldiers is a social hobby is it not? Interesting to note if anyone had played a game someone who was completely disinterested and was playing on their iPhone or whatever.

Daedalus, your admission of doing the same shows you are self aware and socially concious. You obviously understand the importance of social interaction, the people I am worried about are those who won't admit it or worse don't see it.

I love the great outdoors, and being out and about. However I regularly have thoughts and idea's whilst out and about and I instantly want to read up on them or develop them and use the internet as a Great huge library. When I was on my bike the other week, I suddenly started wondering about how you would terra-form a Planet. Next thing you know I am typing it in a search engine and reading Kim Stanley Robinson. I think I would be massively debilitated, without access to this huge vault of instant information, it's truly amazing to think that when I was 11 I used to goto a Library and research things and it would take hours and depend on the libraries content. I haven't set foot in a Library for 15 years.

It's odd, but the internet can make a whimsy take flight, maybe it will liberating if we learn to use it for more than just pornography .

It might be because I still have an old crappy phone with no internet access, all I use it for is calling and texting, pretty much all it's needed for. I have a computer for web-surfing, and if I'm away from it for a while its no biggie, I too like going camping with friends every so often, and so thats me without the internet for a few days, its not a real problem IMO. Although I suppose a smart phone would be handy, some of the apps available now look very interesting.

As a side note - mwnciboo - I heartily approve of your reading Kim Stanley Robinson - I love the Mars trilogy, very very interesting books...

I know. It goes beyond that too. Been to any concerts lately? It's a swarm of little screens as far as the eye can see! It's like they care more about recording it and showing it off to their friends than actually listening to the music! Is your memory really that bad that you can't just tell people what you remember?

Alternative history if iPhones had been around in the 60's.

"Grandad what was Woodstock like?"

"Well I don't really remember"

"Because you smacked out of your skull on Drugs?"

"No because I was too busy messing with my iPhone."

mwnciboo wrote:But it's not truth it's subjective truth or what you have observed.

Since when did 'subjective' become a synonym for 'untrue'? A lot of what we accept as 'true' is reliant (to varying degrees) on intersubjective 'agreement'. Citizen journalism is not about one person's unvarnished view, it's about the weight of many unvarnished views, and that has the power to reveal 'truth'.

I take your point on Oppression and Tyrannical regimes, however I'm talking more about developed societies with democracy where disasters etc happen and people are not oppressed, that the average joe see something dangeous or unusual and thinks *this is Dangerous, right where is my camera?*

So you don't see the benefit of people recording their experience of say, a terrorist attack? I do.

I remember a story not too long ago, I can't find a link for it (In work atm...) But there was a group of masked men that broke into and smashed up a jewellery store in broad daylight. There was footage from the scene (Someone with an iPhone maybe ) that showed everyone nearby standing around dumbstruck as it happened. (I think some were recording as well, I can't remember properly.)

All apart from this little old lady who looked not a day younger than 80 who started beating the snot out of them with her handbag

This is almost the opposite to what you described in your OP. The people around were trying to stay directly out of danger, all apart from this grandma who waded in and tried to stop it. If recording things on an iPhone is considered stupid, would charging a group of potentially armed robbers with a handbag be considered even moreso?

Viewing something through a camera is a way of disassocaiting yourself from the actual events.

Then, afterwards you can feel empowered about your disassocaition by sharing your video with the world.

It is a psychological win/win!

No not really, if you die because of a miss-placed idea of Citizen Journalism who has benefited? The Terrorist, no one say's "it's a pity that guy that tried to film that suicide bomber died. If he had got out of there he probably would have lived, it's sad but he got some good footage", people would actually say "WTF was he thinking ?". Most people seem to put any footage on Youtube and say "Hey isn't this Shocking/Kewl" then within 48hrs the police are after the original footage, just like that poor Malayasian guy who got mugged during the riots. No one went straight to the Police station and show them the footage, they instead stuck it straight on FACEBOOK. Citizen Journalism implies social responsibility, it is almost always people trying to be an Internet Hero by sticking up something shocking to get hits and a bit of a buzz. There is some merit in filming some things sometimes, but 90% of the time it's not to anyone's benefit, it's voyeurism, the police, security services and fire service are pretty good at forensically put things back to together, with out misguided individuals, running about like lose cannons in a dangerous situation.

Just like if a buildings on fire do you grab a fire extinguisher or evacuate (although people will probably try and film it now)? Chances are a fire extinguisher is a bad idea, it won't do anything productive and it will subject you to the smoke, you are better off evacuating and leaving the fire fighting to the professionals. Like everything in life, if you think you can do better than trained Professionals you are leaving yourself open to danger, culpability and also making a situation worse or impairing it's rectification.

I undersand that. He started a thread on a chat forum that he has posted on thousands of times to bash people for using technology too much.

Irony?
