Right except he said everything EXCEPT the colossus grants that. Which is why if you put a Griffin to spot targets for 2 colossi, it could actually be more effective than a manticore because most of your wounds would ignore armor and cover. Btw, does anyone know how to measure the radius of a Deathstrike? I've never used or seen one. Is it the similar to a mantacore but lay down D3+3 pie plates like a barrage, or is it something else? If you get 6pie sheets str 10 ap 1 (with no center) ignore all cover in a massive circle in a normal game.. on turn one... I'm not even sure if anyone would want to play against that... ever.

The radius of the circle is D3+3. So get a point and measure D3+3" around it.

I have used Arty and wiped out a 1000 point Ork list turn 1. It can be very effective, Griffons and Basilisks are awesome.

Strange that I'm not seeing basilisks suggested,
That's because I haven't said anything yet! Basilisks 110% They are all I ever run. They can handle anything, except for terminators really. That combined with the fact that they can fire both direct and indirect means they are the most versatile artillery option.

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

Lolwut.
You might have played more with the griffons, but every time I've played against them I've been the one going "lolwut"...because they don't really hurt =\ They were more effective obstacles once I hit the IG line than painbringers =\
Out of curiosity- what in the hell constitutes arty? People are mentioning russes and Hydra's, afaik one is a MBT and the other is a mobile AA tank, not artillery =\

At the value they're at, fielding one or two in a battery (with something else if wanted) can throw wounds on alot of infantry pretty effectively. Explode a Rhino and drop Ordnance on them, you could be looking at 13-15 Hits that wound on a +2, or wailing on Ork Mobs with 8-10 Hits if they try the whole 2" coherency shtick.

The Girffon, Colossus, Medusa, and Basilisk are the real artillery; open-topped, able to indirect fire (sans Medusa), and can be placed in a battery for a Multiple Barrage. Technically, the Manticore and the Deathstrike are ballistic missiles (and really have no reason to be in the Codex in the first place)...

I really like the Manticore, if only for the scare the other player has and the effort they will put into trying to kill it.
If your playing hordes, the humble platoon HWS mortars work quite well, they are cheap and a few firing together can seriously damge an infantry unit!

You have never heard of anti air artillery? Google AAA gun images. Sure looks like a hydra to me.

I love Manticores. 160 pts for str 10 AP4, D3 large blasts Ordinance barrage sounds great to me, but its a big target for the enemy and you only get 4 shots.
Not really artillery but you can never go wrong with a LRBT

13-15 hits , so 7~ per shot? someone needs to spread 'em! They seem best as guiding shots that can hurt but I'm more scared of the bassy it's guiding. Touche! I've always heard it/read it as just AA guns. I didn't know there was an extra A there! You learn something new every day hey To quote wiki on artillery- "Originally applied to any group of infantry primarily armed with projectile weapons, artillery has over time become limited in meaning to refer only to those engines of war that operate by projection of munitions far beyond the effective range of personal weapons." So I guess that does make sense- the first AA guns would have been called that, but technically they are artillery due to the range involved. interesting...
