Hmmmm Cyp, its good to see you've entered into the time honored tradition of cat killin. I had always thought about breaking into the scene but the local Chinese food resturant rules the roost around here. I wish you the best of luck and may cats and kittens throw themselves at your door. Automatically Appended Next Post: Casey's Law wrote:I think I know what my theme is but it feels a bit lame so I could possibly use a new one. I'll run it by you although I haven't finalised on a lot of names so I'll miss them out. Here is the sort of introductory paragraph:
The land is in turmoil and you are a small time warlord out for you slice of power. You'll use any means necessary to get it, but you're not the only one.
Build an empire and crush your opposition.
I guess the question is how do I get that across most simply. Or will the riskesque map make it clear what the point is?
Isn't this the intro paragraph from Risk?
There is nothing wrong with borrowing heavily from an exsisting game, and its one of the reasons you really can't copyright, trademark or patent game mechanics. What you want to avoid though is creating something themeatically that at first glance appears to be a clone of something already on the market. Basically what I meen by this is that if you want to make a game like risk, give a nod that its sort of like risk but spend the majority of your time showcaseing how its different both themeatically and mechanically.

Actually, its one that we created before we were On The Lamb... that we didn't have the rights to make.

Bahhh Copy Right and IP be Damned.
Incedentily Cyp, I have a game to pitch to you. Its a game about animals, but these aren't just any ordinary animals, their some of histories most well known military figures. The game will initaially be a skirmish game but later I'd like to make it massed battles. I call it Forrestfire.

Well, you're just planning on making this for your friends. So, don't worry about things like ripping off other games, or even something the masses will enjoy (or the BGG crowd either).
Make something fun, add some references and in-jokes that only you and your friends will understand, and add alcohol to the rules somehow.
And, if your group ever decides to get into "serious" boardgames (Settlers is a nice start, but it's just the tip of the iceberg), let us know and we can educate you.
