Stick with the plain Berets dide. They look great, and it sets your figs apart from all the other space dwarves out there. Separrate guns is definitely a great way to go. Just make sure they come with a gun of some sort in the pack.

Absolutely beautifu sculpt, well done!

Why not give them these though, instead of the gun he has?

Because that gun is owned by GW and that would mean that if I put it on my miniature, cast it and sold it, I would be stealing ... not to mention GW would tear me a new one if they saw it.

The Hasslefree Miniatures weapons I will be using are all sold with free use for casting as part of a miniature so I don't have the legal issue with them.

Beautiful sculpt, if a bit static. And yes I know it's just a test. I'd be interested in seeing more. If they're of this quality, they'll sell. There are quite a few of us old timers who lament the abortion of a concept that was the Squats and their disappearance. For some reason GW thought that the idea of silly dwarves in space was a bad idea (it was) and then thought that silly orks in space was a good idea (it wasn't). Both should have gone or both should have stayed but the silly should never have existed.

There are a number of threads on numerous forums (including this one ) about how to revive the space dwarves in a proper way. My favorite is that the Nids pretty well gutted their hegemony of star systems and the survivors are specialist Nid hunters including berserker slayers a la fantasy dwarves. Wrap this in with heavy armor and high tech weapons in a battlestar galactica type fleet and you've got something that I'd spend a lot of money on if GW would ever pull their collective heads out of their a$$es.

For your little project, I wouldn't attach the guns to the sculpt as this will make them more easily modified. Hasslefree isn't the only line of add-on weapons (although I personally like their plasma gun).

BTW if you ever decide to do any female dwarves, they DO NOT have beards.

Yes, there are female marines and my Sunhawks will explain it to you.

I will be sculpting female Dwarfs and they won't be getting beards!

I could go for the empty hand approach... right hand with a pistol grip, left hand open to support a stock... The trouble is that the supporting hand won't grip the weapon, it will just have the weapon sat on it.

I don't want to pigeon-hole these into one game or another so I won't be going mad with special kit... there will be basic infantry with a leader and a couple of support weapons.

No power armour/ vehicles/ berserks etc...

If I can stick with it for long enough to get a group sculpted and cast, then I'll start thinking about other stuff.

Legs done on the next one:

Another basic pose but I plan on finishing the body and leaving the head/arms off to get some blanks cast. Once I am happy that the body is right, I'll make a few more in different poses (without heads/arms) to use as blanks as well.

Each blank can be used to create a number of different miniatures... so I can build a range quite quickly... which will be nice.

Things are moving slowly... but they are moving

That's an excellent sculpt.

I would add the following as your range expands.

Medium to light body armour, to bulk the model, especially at the arms, shoulders and chest. You could do a heavier armoured series later on.

Leave the guns separate to allow for easy weapon swaps for those who wish to use these guys in existing game systems.

Bionics in places, eyes, leg, arm etc.

Consider separate arms/heads/torso to waist for maximum range in your models in the future, will encourage 'unit' purchasing... more bang for their buck, more bucks for your mini!

Looking good, keep it up!

Out of curiosity, how tall are these from ground to eyeline? I just want to see how they'll compare to my Harlequin/BlackTree "not-squats".

The first sculpt was a test to get proportions right and I had no intention of making any more in basic fatigues.

I was always going to make them with body armour which consists of knee pads, crotch plate, torso armour and shoulder sleeves (a tube that covers the upper arm and shoulder).

I haven't decided on the weapon yet... so these will not be getting any to start off.

I don't plan on making them multi part (it just causes more work than I want) but I will be making them available with head-swaps (there will be the bearded ones to start with then I'll put together some headless bodies with a range of heads that fit the chunky-ness of the bodies... and not all of them will be Dwarf in nature).

Of course, I need to get the basics done first and I have a full time job as it is so things will take a lot of time.

I am listening to all the comments but I do have to consider the work-load and the cost (multi-part costs more... it is simple economics... and I can't afford that).

My overall plan is to produce a small selection of troops and any profits I make will be given to charity so that I don't have to pay the tax-man .

EDIT:: The first sculpt is 22mm to eye level.

I have started to add body armour now:

Once I have tidied the gaps and cleaned him up a bit, he will be ready for casting to use as a dolly. I plan on sculpting four more in different poses to the same standard (no arms/head/equipment) before getting some masters cast up for me to sculpt the arms on. I am not sure about heads yet... so I will wait to decide what to do (separate heads or sculpted on).

Should be fun .

Keep an eye on http://insosworld.blogspot.co.uk/ for more details.
