I'm not trying to enter a "fanboy frenzy" I'm just really confused as to how a hypothetical situation which may never occur can be more annoying than something along the same lines that is definitely going to happen.
On a kind of related note, Sony could have done the patent so that they can now make royalties off of Microsoft doing this, I can't remember the exact wording of the patent and whether it covered what Microsoft is planning.

I say annoying because comparing the two ideas side by side, one is clearly worse than the other, regardless of whether they're actually being implemented. I suppose if we want to throw in reality, I can't say Sony's is more annoying since it doesn't exist yet.

Patents for software and hardware are to an extent kind of silly. You can basically do the exact same thing, and so long as there is some minute difference, its okay.
Also, its naive to believe that Sony doesn't want to do something similar. They're after the same thing with the PS that Microsoft is with the XBox, a multimedia center. They're not just game consoles anymore.

And technically speaking, this would mean that the XBox one IS better, in the sense that, perhaps, getting stabbed in the leg is better than getting a shotgun blast to the head. Where are you getting this from?! The article says NOTHING about adverts being in, before or after games. The adverts will be implemented for the streaming services. This makes perfect sense, Online gaming takes up some ridiculously low amont of bandwidth (~30kbs IIRC), it requires comparitively low server loads (the real reason why PSN is free or at least a goodwill PR). The cost of maintaining the gaming servers (or whatever they use) is MORE than covered by the base subscription charge. They need the revenue from adds to continue maintaining its streaming servers at current rates and forecasted rates. Until they start streaming games there will not be adverts during them.

This has nothing to do with needing to cover server costs. Those are more than covered by the monthly fees too. They use the already existent network. Arguably they may want to recoup having to pay for the rights to stream ESPN and the like.
But ultimately the motivation is the same as usual. Microsoft sees a piece of pie. Microsoft likes pie.

Not saying its anything other than a shakedown, but i can see where they're coming from.
The real reason behind the post was to try and put the fears of the 'NUads' being in the actual games to bed.

I absolutely recall reading an article where it was stated that Sony is looking to implement advertisements in the middle of gameplay, and that it would pause the game so the ad could play. I'll see if I can dig it up....
Actually, I'll do you one better, here's the patent itself:
http://www.google.com/patents?id=lDb9AQAAEBAJ&pg=PA1&dq=sony+entertainment&hl=en&sa=X&ei=mLS-T8TGIqqI6AHM__GqCg&ved=0CEYQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=sony%20entertainment&f=false
Key here: " Suspending play of the interactive content, displaying an advertisement, and resuming play of the interactive content".
Now, are they absolutely going to implement this? No. Is there a chance they will? Yes. They're obviously interested in it or I doubt they'd've bothered patenting it. So, while the XBox one is closer to implementation, the Sony one, should it come to pass, would be worse.
Here's an article about it. I'm not familiar with the source but they even link to the US Patent Office, so... http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a383697/sony-games-to-be-interrupted-by-adverts.html
I reiterate that neither are good, but if I had to pick one to live with, it'd be the XBox one. I'd rather have the ads before the game then right in the goddamn middle of it, but it's all moot to me. I don't have a horse in this race since I haven't bought a console in over a decade. I was already pretty lukewarm to the concept of buying one in the future, but now I almost certainly won't.

Because Microsoft has companies signed on, and has announced that they are going to do it. Sony has a patent for it.
At this point in time, of the two of them, microsoft's advert system is worse, because it's definitely going to be implemented, whereas Sony's may not be.
The first to implement gets the hate, the rest follow quietly and seal the door.

Er... Guys...
This only affects things like TV apps. Hulu does this. Most video streaming sites do this. It's not like it's mid-game advertising. It's just adding Adverts to the TV network's apps.
So you're all complaining about TV Advertisements. Which have been around since before every single one of you were born.

LordofHats wrote:Microsoft is planning to launch interactive ads on its Xbox 360 streaming services that will rival television networks. The software giant has signed on Toyota, Unilever and Samsung Mobile to offer its new “NUads,” The Los Angeles Times reported. The advertisements will debut this fall and will be found on Microsoft’s Xbox video apps, including those offered by ESPN, TMZ, NBC News and UFC. The first iteration of NUads will let users vote in response to different questions. For instance, Toyota will ask users what other devices they would like to see “reinvented” the way the company has “reinvented” some of its auto models. Users will be able to respond through the Xbox controller or voice and hand gestures with the Kinect. Toyota will then have access to the data and demographic information. Microsoft’s general manager of entertainment and advertising for the Xbox Live online service, Ross Honey, said the company plans to charge a “premium” compared with typical commercial rates. “There have been interactive ads on the Web before, but the beauty of it is that we’re bringing that to the TV,” he said. “It’s a substantially more valuable ad product.”
http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=ArHDOZEtVzAtRB7Gd8.FbdWbvZx4?p=Microsoft+xbox+ads+&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-701
The ads will be unskippable, cannot be answered with "do not wish to respond", and will appear when games start up or you begin a video on netflix. The Youtube video talking about the feature has been up less than a day and already has its comments disable. Apparently, Microsoft missed the memo. No one likes ads. Paying $60 for XBL suddenly seems less worthwhile.
I got a hand gesture for them....
