By "Mother Nature" do you mean the deliberate hunting of a species by humans for profit to the point of extinction? Or dying off as a direct result of humans screwing with eco systems by introducing species that upset the natural order of the area by either having no predators or by introducing predators that then cause the extinction of a species?

I can't remember the last time a species went extinct because they couldn't hack it on their own with no interference from people.

The argument has been made that the Giant Panda is going extinct of its own accord due to some problem with their reproductive cycle.

Pandas are an evolutionary dead end...
They aren't adapting, they can only eat certain plants and they are having problems reproducing...
If we left them alone they'd likely die out anyway.

Then that is perfectly fine. I won't argue against mother nature there.

That being said, I would prefer that we intervene on behalf of the species to see if there isn't a remedy to that problem, as the species IMO is worth keeping. Now if you were to tell me that Fire Ants were going out because of something, I wouldn't think twice about letting them die off. They bring nothing to the table but pain and headache.

Ants do bring a fair bit of balance to an ecosystem IIRC...

More importantly, what are we going to use our surplus supply of magnifying glasses for if not burning ants?

I'm confused, isn't that what we already do? Stupid species had it coming. How dare they not evolve higher thought processes.

That criteria would apply to every single nigh-uncountable species that has gone extinct previous to the rise of humanity as dominant lifeform on the planet - which is a blink of the eye on that sort of scale. I mean, pretty much everything on the first half of this list, right? Man didn't wipe out Trilobytes or T-rexes.

Although we would have; because man T-rexes running around free just won't work. The droppings alone would be a huge issue.

And so doth another species be struck from the grand scroll of life and another star doth glint and die,
lost to the eternal curse,
that of the passage of time,
which doth rise to claim us all one by one,
until all the stars in the heavens,
have been extuinguished and non remain,
just dust.
