feth me.. Basketball?! I could even understand it if US beat England at soccer seeing as the States would be the slight underdogs (despite being almost as good anyway) but Basketball?

We don't play basketball!

That's like an Englishman making a thread called "England defeat Americans in renowned pasty faced cricket, rain and appalling teeth competition"

Actually, I should have posted along these lines last week, a 350lbs trucker from Alabama beat a 105lb amphetamine addled Englishman with a laudanum addiction in a fried chicken eating competition.

I was fething amazed!

I wouldn't be too confident about that. We have three teams of fine Indian Americans who are playing in the morning on Saturday morning when Team Wienie goes on advanced partol at the local park. You might be surprised how well we do.

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Yeah, I'd echo my fellow Brits in that basketball isn't played even at school level here. We played football, rugby, cricket and tennis, mainly. I'm not sure I even touched a basketball in secondary school, come to think of it.

For illustrative purposes, I've thrown a javelin more times.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

Okay, so the male version of "Cougar" is now officially "Albatross".

Yes, but the USA lost to the then USSR at basketball. I can't remember the year exactly, but it was around 1980 and a rather big deal was made of it iirc. The US thought they had won, but the ref hadn't noticed the Russians had called a timeout just before the end of the 4th. After the US had finished celebrating beating the 'dirty commies', there was still 3 seconds left on the clock..... You can guess what happened next... The Russians won by a single point, thus winning the gold medal.

I suppose the point of this little missive is that even the very best teams can lose....

The US *won* that game. The refs threw it in favor of the Soviets.

There are decent international players and national teams that can compete with the US due to superior coaching and teamwork. Brazil is usually a tough game, Britain just isn't a basketball country.

Agreed Amaya, 100%. I was just stating fact

As someone whose only brush with Basketball was watching a few games in the Philippines, I have to ask, aren't the Greeks an Spanish quite good as well?

Spain is pretty decent, I don't really know about the Greeks, but several good players have come from southeast Europe.

In terms of individual skill the top tier NBA players are typically superior to anyone else, but it's a team game. If you all do is have 4 stand around as 1 guy drives to the hoop all night it will be more than possible for a good team to beat you.

I think that Basketball should probably be a U-25 kind of affair or maybe even a U-21. Would love to see some college kids get a chance at competing.

Originally, all Olympic events were amateur only. Boxing still is I believe. Im of the school of thought that thinks all Olympic events should still be amateur only....introducing professional players just turns it into another 'cup competion'....
