Alarios... 12 colors is considered a lot? I have a fairly simple color scheme... but lets see how many colors it is...

black
dark blue
light blue
electric blue
white
silver
gold
light grey
dark grey
graveyard earth
dwarf flesh
sepia ink
black ink

so my "simple" scheme ends up using 13 different colors and inks :( Takes me about an hour per guardsman, 2-3 hours per heavy weapon team.

Lessee... how many are my guys...

Dark Blue Grey
Dark Sea Grey
Medium Sea Grey
Light Sea Grey
Black
Desert Sand
Red Leather
Amarantha Red
Red
Mud Brown
Olive Drab
Field Drab
Old Gold
Steel
Brass
Brown Glaze
Black Glaze
Glaze Medium

Around 18 colours for the basic guardsman. Of course, stuff for the more special models ends up using a few more. The jacket on the company commander took so many colours that I don't even remember them anymore.

I'll let your know as soon as I finish painting and building them.

Going on year five for my Tau Cadre. Almost had them done and then 6th came out. Fething GW did that on purpose.

Edit: Wait.... 6 years. I got them in 2008.

Some Throne-Forsaken Battlefield on the other side of the Galaxy

I must've bought the IG codex 10 months to a year ago, and I'm still putting the finishing touches on my Guard (only a tank, some Psykers and a few more guardsmen to go!). Of course, then I have to paint it all.. But that's because I'm planning on running footguard, over the much cheaper and more quickly-built mech-vets. I strongly recommend eBay, as at least half my IG are pre-built models from there, you can buy in large amounts, and they're significantly cheaper. However, if you prefer to build your own models,eBay may not be for you.

The Void

I started collecting my Guard army a couple months ago. I'm actually about at a point where I'm done with it. I might buy a model or two more (Hellhound for example) ebay was my friend in general and allowed me to pick up a pair of Leman Russ for the cost of a single one new, some extra bits let me utilize all the heavy weapons sprues I could and so forth. This let me kit bash the hell out of special characters like the Officer of the Fleet, and I selected some counts as models for certain special characters. I also had Lady Luck and Admiral Awesome smile on me and drop an extra 20 Guardsmen and 6 HWTs in my lap (on the sprue) so I was able to splurge on some things I was going to wait on. Mostly for counts as stuff like using Cadian snipers I picked up for 4$/model as opposed to buying a ratling pack. Or the famous "Vasquez" model instead of Guardsman Marbo, yes she cost a bit more but it's the feel for the army I want that counts right?

I got lucky with vehicles by and large two, winning some lucky auctions for bargain sentinels, Leman Russ, etc. Having an inventive mind and a desire to convert while not really minding being unable to play GW official tournies also helps. For example for the price of a new Manticore kit I picked up a 1/35 scale M270 MLRS and Flakpanzer Gepard, with a few extra bits they'll make excellent Manticore and Hydra Flak tank stand ins.

So speed of acquisition and assembly depends on time, (I got lucky with some extra free time right at the start), money (I saved up for awhile before I started buying), level of skill (I futzed stuff up a lot >.< and the occasional bit of Emperor gifted providence and a side order of creativity.

I would emphasize the last, if your FLGS is good with conversions, and most of the people you're playing with are too I strongly suggest having at it and letting your mind out to wander and explore, you can create some good looking models for a fraction of the cost that still easily fit the fluff provided you're willing to put some time, effort and green stuff in to it.

I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long

I assembled and painted a 2000 point IG army in 14 days.

They looked like this;

And vehicles looked like this;

As you can see this is barely tabletop-standard, but it would suffice as the goal of a 14 days painting spree.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the game I then went back and started to improve on them.

On the other hand, my Ork army is slowly looking like it might one day (perhaps) be all painted.....after 20+ years of 40K.
