Guess you guys don't have (or you haven't read) Asterix over there.

I was just making a reference to these guys, who beat the gak out of every Roman Legion sent at them thanks to their Druid, Getafix, being able to make a magic potion which gives you superhuman strength.

The Laws of Thermodynamics:
1) You cannot win. 2) You cannot break even. 3) You cannot stop playing the game.

Those Gauls made it all the way to England, Rome, even Egypt if I remember right. They were truly a village of great warriors.

Pvt Hook was appearantly a model of the professional Victorian soldier, posted to guard the sick and infirm he battled bravely and led them from the hospital block when it was endangered by fire. So some similarity to the film but casting him as a sciving malingerer was enough for his remaining family (very old daughters iirc) to walk out of the premier in disgust.

I think most people only really know Rourke's Drift through the completely awesome film. I wish that movie had more lasting cultural impact, as then we might get more straight up war stories, instead of the action hero pap we get instead.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.
