Shootas give you more tactical options. Choppa boys are better in cc. So if you want to move your Trukks/'Wagons up the field, jump out and assault, I still prefer the Choppa boys. They also get better in the subsequent rounds of combat.

Shootas are better for positioning and moving/shooting. Choppas are still better for ...chopping.

The best solution may actually to use a mixture of both.

Well, you obviously missed my question. When do choppas succeed in close combat, where shootaz would not?

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

I would also like to point out that shootas can even be better at assaulting.

Let say you have the target somewhere infront of you on the board, you are walking up and shoot when ever you can. Because of the shoota boyz longer range, they can shoot one more time then the sluggas.

30 sluggas shooting and assaulting some marines:
30 shots (5+ 4+)
120 attacks (4+ 4+)
total: 5+30 wounds. Assuming the marines dont kill any orks in the assault.

30 shootas shooting and assaulting some marines:
60 shots (5+ 4+) This is the shooting phase before thanks to their longer range.
60 shots (5+ 4+)
90 attacks (4+ 4+)
total: 10+10+23 wounds. Assuming the marines dont kill any orks in the assault.

So the difference is really that the shootas may get an extra shooting on the target before going in. And that the shoots are made before the assault. If the sluggas are attacking some tought melee opponent most of them might die because of poor initiative before they can strike. The harder the opponent will strike (before you may attack) the better shootas become.

The only time I'd take any sluggas, would be in a trukk, assaulting something small defenseless target. Or anything fearless really tough, that would take more then 3 turns to kill.
