Agreed...

Although according to this article I'm pretty OK apart from the food/water aspects. Food could be an issue, but water should be fine. I live in Britain - on any given day I just need to look up with my mouth open and I'll be sorted

I think they're dark brown (I'd have to look). To be honest I wonder if they're even viable anymore, cause they've been in various basements going on 20 years I.E. Those things are almost as old as I AM

Good money says their the original MRE's...shelf life of 10 yrs but can be extended on a yearly basis. How they test that is they get a volunteer to eat one. Open one up and you see "Beans in tomato sauce" then you have the originals.

Still better than irradiated giant rats like most people will eat in the upcoming nuclear zompocalyptical depressionary recession of epic and biblical rapturial proportions.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

Yeah, my mom is a little paranoid about the end of the world. Not super paranoid, but she certainly went out of her way to acquire 200 MRE's in the late 80's

Thought to be honest the prospect of eating them makes me imagine spending quite a bit of time on the Man Throne in yonder bathroom.

Unlike the ones we have now. WHich is quite a lot better then the roman legion rations you have....eerrrrr the MRE's. Your throne time will be cut quite short as you drop a "brick"

Frazz its a giving. Either roll of charmin in a ziploc bag or baby wipes. Go with the baby wipes. 4 swipes. Trick is in folding them to get four swipes.

Chicago

#1) Storable Food
Check. According to GrubHub, there's 612 restaurants that deliver to me. That's plenty of food.

#2) Clean Water
Check. I have several different sinks, and a britta, so I'm set.

#3) Shelter
Check. I have a house.

#4) Warm Clothing
Check. I live in Chicago, so having warm clothing is a must.

#5) An Axe
Check. I've got a small hand axe, and several hardware stores within walking distance.

#6) Lighters Or Matches
Check. Got a few of each, and the 7-11 across the street sells plenty more.

#7) Hiking Boots Or Comfortable Shoes
Check. I've got a pair of sneakers that are holding up nicely.

#8) A Flashlight And/Or Lantern
Check. I've got a 2 or 3 flashlights, and a camping lantern.

#9) A Radio
Check. My phone can get internet radio, and there's a radio in the car.

#10) Communication Equipment
Check. A computer and cell phone.

#11) A Swiss Army Knife
Sadly, no. But, I've got some cooking knives that are much sharper than a swiss army knife, and I've got a few corkscrews, a can opener, and scissors. Is there anything else in that thing?

#12) Personal Hygiene Items
Check. I'm running low on shampoo, but I'll buy more before I run out.

#13) A First Aid Kit And Other Medical Supplies
Check. There's a first aid kit in the guest bathroom.

#14) Extra Gasoline
Check. The car has gas enough for a few weeks (I use public transit, so it has enough to last months if needed), plus there's a gas station nearby.

#15) A Sewing Kit
Check. It's not a very impressive one, but there's a tailor just down the street.

#16) Self-Defense Equipment
Check. I've got a cell phone to call police or animal control.

#17) A Compass
Check. There's an app for that.

#18) A Hiking Backpack
No. I've managed to survive 30 years without one, I don't think this is really a required thing to survive.

#19) A Community
Check. Strangely enough, this is the one thing typically lacking from your typical "survivalist".

#20) A Backup Plan
Ummm... a backup plan for what exactly? I don't really even have a main plan, beyond "go home tonight, watch some Olympics and order take-out". I guess my backup plan could be "go home tonight, warm up some leftovers, and read a book". So... check!

Looks like I'm all set!

I do get the whole "survivalists are crazy bit", but is it really considered unreasonable to be prepared to shelter in place with 7-10 days worth of supplies?

Not really. Especially if you live in a Natural Disaster prone area. I remember how bearable the 2 weeks without Power/water/ect was after Hurricane Ivan, just because my dad stored a few weeks of food/water/gas with stabil/ect. IMO anyone that doesn't have a month of supplies and lives in one of Mother Nature's punching bags is the crazy one.
