The power weapon is certainly better against Marines than the maul. If all you ever face against Marines, then take a sword. The maul is just a lot better against most everything else. It is admittedly pretty meta dependent.

6 sergeants with Mauls vs 6 Sergeants with Swords attacking Marines in PA.
18 Maul attacks, hitting on 4s, wounding on 3s. They cause 2 wounds after saves.
18 Sword attacks, hitting on 4s, wounding on 5s. They cause 3 wounds with no PA saves.
However, this is the only situation where the sword is better. And its only marginally better.
But against enemies without PA, or enemies with TDA, the Maul is significantly better.
And Axes are superior to both against PA and TDA. They cause 4.5 wounds against T4 with no armor saves allowed.

Right, and this is why the sword seems kind of silly.

Two things, though. Firstly, if you're up against storm shields, an axe isn't better against termies with storm shields. In this case, your opponent is twice as likely to make a save, but the mace is twice as likely to wound.
Secondly, you've got to survive long enough to use the axe in the first place, which isn't exactly guaranteed.

Well, you will at least get to swing the first round anyway. Unless its a squad of all LC terminators, in which case you were screwed to begin with.

... and if they're not LC terminators, then they're THSS terminators, and the mace and axe are the same...

I think I've found a way to model maces. Cut the Chainsword off, remove hand guard, cut the blade in half, take of the teeth and glue the top half to the hand. I'm not the best modeller, but I think it might look halfway decent when painted. My original idea was to just cut the sword in half, take the teeth off the top half and stick them on the opposite side of the mace, making it spikey on both sides. The power source for the chainsword skewed the look of it though, so tried sanding it down and fethed that to gak and back. Still had the top half, so glued that on instead. More work needed, obviously.
