I've only seen the trailer, but it looks awful on a scale beyond the ken of mortal man. No mutants? No 3 breasted hooker? No angry midget with a machine gun? No Michael Ironside?!?!

No, hell no......

Ah, but in my defence I have only seen the trailer... What about the angry midget with the machine gun? Or mutants....It's still dubious in my opinion, some of the scenes in the trailer follow the original so slavishly. Like at the start when he sits up in bed and his wife drapes her arm around his shoulder, that's exactly the same.....including the exact same lines....

I'm starving for original movies at the moment, but they are nowhere to be found, it's all so galling!

I had this conversation at work the other day - you just can't capture that 80's spirit any more. No one wants their villains wearing chainmail vests and awesomely douchey mustaches. They want 'grit' and 'realism'. That gak has it's place, but sometimes I just want to see someone get kicked onto a steam pipe.

I saw Total Recall yesterday at the matinee price, not expecting much at all other than a two hour time sink in some air conditioning but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. The action is over the top and at times reminded me of the original film, and yeah, the super-bad ass robot police cannot hit gak with their weapons. Still, if you can over look some hamfisted plot armor the movie is a fun ride with some entertaining nods to the original. What I liked most of all was the atmosphere of the movie. It had the great 80's dystopian cyber-punk feeling to it that reminded me of Blade Runner and Running Man and as I left the theater all I wanted to do was call up my friends and run an old school game of Shadowrun 2nd edition.

I'd say if you can catch the movie on the cheap its worth a matinee ticket to see the special effects on a large screen. Don't go in expecting the Arnold movie, and maybe read the Philip K. Dick short story that both movies were based on, since this newest version supposedly follows the original source material more closely than the 80's film.

That's a fair argument.

Man, my memory really deceived me on this one; it's actually kind of an awful movie. Even giving them a pass on the special effects, the dialogue was absolutely terrible.

Maybe I was a little older when I saw it, but as much fun as my friends and I had watching it over and over again, we all knew it was pretty rubbish.

Predator still holds up pretty well though.

Predator is just a great movie.

So far as Colin Farrell, isn't part of talent being able to select good roles for yourself? In my opinion, it's the only thing Marky Mark has going for him - an unerring nose for roles that he can pull off ably despite being only a middling actor at best.

Fair argument. I mean, I'd argue that it shouldn't be the case, because being a good actor doesn't make you any good at knowing what pitches and what scripts will turn out to be good movies. But regardless of what should be the case, it is the system we've got, and that means a guy like Nicholas Cage, who is a very capable actor but a terrible judge of movies, ends up making a lot of really terrible films, while a downright mediocre actor like Marky Mark ends up with a decent hit ratio.

For the record, I saw this film had Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel in it and assumed it be pretty bad. The preview confirmed that.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Except for the whole leaving out of the "Mars" bit. Which is in the original story and is kinda essential to it.

It's actually based more off the Arnie movie based on the story than the story itself.

Minority Report.

In Bruges.

Tigerland.

Maybe The Recruit, if you like the genre.

I actually enjoyed the new Total Recall, not the original's camp/arnold fun but a pretty decent sci-fi piece. It also included a gak ton of cameos from my favorite revolvers (the Mateba Unica 6 and the Chiappa Rhino) and lots of Kate Beckinsal/Jessica Biel. Not about to change the world, but worth a matinee showing with my friends.

I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn

I enjoyed it. Its fun, the set pieces are cool (I want a gaming bored that looks like the Colony, probably one of the best looking pieces in the film), the robots are fun (but why do they have to CARRY their guns?) and the costuming is great. Not Oscar worthy, but as far as summer action movies go, not a bad ride.

In all respects, it was like the Battleship movie; Not great, but it was fun and a decent film.
