I understand the feeling but I give you no sympathy, your playing with expensive point GK's, I'm using orks my 500p army has 46 models in it, one being a dakkajet.
Deadlines and a good atmosphere are what is required, if you've got a tournament you will get them all done in time

I'm really not sure what I can add here, but here I go...
When I started getting into 40k, I just accepted that painting was part of the hobby. So I picked up the basic starting paint kit, and have only picked up a few additional colors. I work evenings, so painting is one of the few things I can do when I get home that I know won't disturb the roomies. I know nothing I paint will ever be award winning, and I know not everything I paint is "correct" by lore standards. But at the same time, I'm painting and doing this for myself, and the people I have shown my mini's too have said I've done a pretty good job.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is this is something that your going to get out of it as much as your willing to put in. Sure there are things you can do to get though the army faster. My best advice is when someone starts nagging you about your army just reply with "Do you want to play or not?"

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Nobody will ever care, less or more.... The phrase as it stands is ingrained and trying to correct people just makes you sound like a pompous ass.
As per the TOPIC... depending on your army type the colored primer works great! I did it for my original Night Lords back in highschool and it was awesome. The paint was easy and the details took awhile but looked great. No washes. No dry brushing. Easiest minis I've ever painted. Not going that route this time around but I'm more about the Zen now...

Well, the quickest way I know of to get an actually great looking army on the table fast is to play Imperical Fists or White Scars. The secret with these though is that instead of paint you use fine felt markers. A 0.5mm or smaller for example, Those markers in conjunction with an even white or yellow basecoat will make your army look really good, as the markers make detail work an absolute breeze. Pretty much the only thing you have to paint afterwards is the metal stuff, and that's only if you really want to. (aside from the bolter) Just get the yellow/white primer, spray the models assembled but for back packs and bolters, do those seperately, make sure you get everywhere. After that just go over the armour detail lines with a 0.5 mm black felt marker and do the eyes/lenses with a red marker and presto. A darn good looking army which should take you less than ten minutes per infantry model to paint. Spelling.
