You don't need flyers to compete, you need anti-flyer to compete, but it just so happen for most armies that their anti-flyer units are flyers.

Frankly, often you can just ignore the flyers, especially single-plane lists.
I think at the end of the day, more than 2-4 flyers draws a lot of points from important things, like durable troops for objectives and such.

I see people say this all the time and it makes me wonder if they have ever actually seen the points value of most flyers? As for 'singleplane lists', that's a fluffy non-competitive army you are most likely talking about, as competitive players know that taking just one is pointless, so not really a point in a 'how to beat this' style thread, as fluffy lists are generally beatable regardless.

actually, i really enjoy just taking a single dakka jet at this time... I also only happen to have 1 >.> but i find it allows me enough flexibility to not feel cheesy first and foremost but also it really forces my enemy to choose between the flyers or the horde... depending on if my waaagh is still around or not is important too but yeah i would say it's a great boon having them cause they have come in nice in a pinch for things like objective gameplay but I am pretty sure a dakka jet outdoes every other flyer at this time with garanteed dakka at this time. That being said it's paper thing and i REALLY wish it had at least 11 front and side armor ... :(

I run one razorwing flyer and it hasn't won me games. It's come on, blown up a tank then got shot down.
It's been shot down by IG with a large volume of fire.
In my gaming group, I think I'm the only one with a flyer apart from a BT player who has some thing from FW I think.
I like it and continue to use it, but it doesn't seem game breaking, but then as someone said earlier, maybe thats because I'm only running one.

Ehem, you obviously haven't played vs. IG flyer spam yet. Imagine Nightscythes' nastiness x 5

... I play Elysians, Sigvatr. You don't get more IG Flyer spammy than that. Points wise, it's 100 points of Night Scythe, which effectively has 2 twin-linked autocannons that are potentially 6 twin-linked autocannons... against 130 points of Valkyrie with 1 multilaser and 2 rocket pods, or it's 165 points of Doom Scythe, which effectively has the same as the Night Scythe for air-to-air, against 130 points of Vendetta with 3 twin-linked lascannons.

The Night/Doom Scythe puts out more shots, more accurately, with higher manoeuvrability against the scarier option (because to be effective, Vendettas need to come in squadrons).

Put another way, a Vendetta squadron can kill a Night Scythe per turn. Conversely, a Night Scythe has the potential to kill a Vendetta squadron per turn.

Basically, Flyers as Dedicated Transports blow any other kind of flyer out of the water because of squadron rules. IG flyers... really aren't that nasty in comparison. For 3 Vendettas, and some change you can have 4 Night Scythes who have the ability to target independently and don't share incoming damage with their mates.
