The solution is to sell all the extra, but put the money back into gaming. For example, sell off an entire army and use the money to buy a Manta. Then you can look at the Manta and think about how awesome it is instead of thinking about the boxes of random plastic kits you sold to get it. Meanwhile it will take up a lot less space than the things it replaced, allowing you to fit your gaming space into a much smaller area.
And of course I wouldn't feel bad at all about getting rid of new-in-box stuff as long as I got a good deal on it. It's all easily replaceable if I want it back, so the only loss is the financial one if I sold at a discount and then bought it back at full price.
