I saw folks buying Colonel Chenkov for $30+ when the actual model sells for $15 from GW. This wasn't just an entirely too high Buy it Now, this was a bidding war.
Ebay sellers definitely make a lot of extra money off of people who don't know what they are buying. Through the years I have bought tons of armies, built them and then sold them off on ebay to raise funds to buy the next modeling project I had in my head. Everytime I set up a series of auctions it never fails that one item I expected to sell really well didn't sell at all and another that I thought I'd barely make any money on would sell for some crazy high price because someone just HAD to have it...it is weird.
Some sellers just don't know any better and try to sell things for way too high. At a con sale I had someone try to charge me $20 for a dark eldar lord figure that was already built and didn't come with any of its options. I kind of laughed and said no way. The seller got indignant and wanted to know why I laughed at their price and I had to explain clearly to them that I could spend less money on a brand new one that I could build exactly to my own needs instead of being stuck with the single pose, plus add the extra parts to my bitz collection for future use. She still didn't seem to get it.

That way if I win I still come out ahead and if I lose then I made someone do something stupid. If I really want to be an ebay troll I have a phone app that will auto bid for me a few seconds before auction end, but that is usually for OOP items.
