I never voted for conservatives, hell I never voted for anybody last election!

Anyway, I would urge, no beg, the people of Texas to write to their leaders and ask them to reverse their decision. It's for your own good. Don't mess with the UN. Let these peaceful brothers in. You can't expect Texans to spell vote, let alone do it Embrace the UN, it will all be over soon
Look at my avatar, I do this out of love for all things Texan.

Frazz, why do I get the feeling the UN are there because you've been in secret communication with them these past months? I doubt you were even born in Texas!!

There are 60 million people in the UK.

10 million of them voted for the conservatives.

Me and Albatross did.. seems pretty free to me!

Hell yes, I'm a party member. What's your point, Testify? Apart from 'Bwaaaah! The Tories are mean! '

Millions of people voted for us. Even without the Lib Dems we still would have had a lot more seats in the Commons than Labour. If you don't like the result, do something to help the party you support, like I do. Unless of course you just don't like democracy, in which case you're free to jog on to which ever third-world hell-hole is currently accepting pasty socialist herberts. I hear Honduras is nice*.

Look, we can do, "Ha ha, my country's better than yours!" later. For now, one of you guys needs to get over to Vienna and let these boys know that picking and subsequently losing even a political fight with 1/50th of a country is probably not where they want to end up on the good ol' organizational relevancy flowchart.

First of all, I think, like everyone from Texas, you are grossly overestimating the importance given to what that state thinks.

Second, can someone please explain to me why Texas seems to have their panties in a knot over the UN observing their elections? Because the typical overcompensation-freakout on Texas' part really seems to imply that they are trying to hide some type of wrongdoing.

Having anyone in the election area besides persons working there is generally not permitted as a violation of our fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution, so sayeth the courts and the government.

I'd assume that they're trying to accomplish the same thing they accomplished at the last 6 US votes they observed, observing the democratic process and seeing whether people actually are free to vote without some group or another trying to "persuade" them to vote a certain way.

Cool, you'll have no problem citing your sources for that, then.

Also, I would have thought voters would be allowed there too, or no? If not, maybe that's why observers are being sent over.

Each states... sometime jurisdiction has rules and regulation governing this...

Such as, if you're NOT a poll work or waiting to vote, you must stay "X" yards away.

Texas law doesn't allow the presence of independent observers at polling stations?

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Don't know... but, I'm pretty sure you need to "register" that you're there to observe. That's what you have to do in MO... but, I'm not sure about TX. Different state...thus, different laws & regulations.

That doesn't sound like an issue of constitutionally guaranteed freedom (like they count for anything anyway). It's almost as if some of you people put the word 'constitution' into sentences for emotional effect...

That's how it works...

States can do pretty much what it wants, as long as it doesn't contradict the Constitution or break some other regulation (ie, DoJ pre-clearance acts)

I think the bigger and far more important question is, "Why the are the UN yet again sticking their noses into the affairs of a stable & democratic country who haven't had any serious government-led human rights abuses within the past century, when craphole dictatorships like Syria are openly slaughtering thousands of their own civilians?"

But then again, this is the UN, and they've been utterly useless at their job since about 1990'ish-something. (everything went to hell when they allowed freaking China & Russia of all countries to have veto power on the security council... )

This isn't the UN sending troops to monitor the polls.

It's a UN sponsored organization observing the polls in key states where voter intimidation/disenfranchisement is likely.

Personaly, the idea of an organization that lets itself get run by people that hate us monitoring our voting like we're some third world country is a farce.

Boohoo.

The idea that the United Nations is run by countries that "hate us" is as ridiculous as the idea that Bush engineered 9/11.
