Auto translators or dictionaries that only give a single synonym are useless. What you need is a list of words and their context and usage. Otherwise you end up saying dumb stuff. I was praised once for calling one of my friends a "Zweiter Weltkrieg Geschichte Streber" yet the same word didn't make any sense when I used it to translate "nerd rage" and was told that the word "nerd" in that use is untranslatable.

I have enough context from my two years of german class, which was preceeded 3 years of Latin (Latin 3 and German 1 were taken at the same time)... Google Translate was simply being used as a reference.
Even then, it should be avoided at all costs. The only thing it's good for is translating a webpage when you don't know the language at all. The worst thing about it is that it doesn't give you any explanation of why it's giving a particular translation. It also comes out very strange with untranslatable words. If you put in words intending one meaning, it could give you a completely different meaning.
