In short form:

Killing stuff, maneuvering, and keeping your own scoring units alive are the primary ways we work toward a victory in this game. Killing is obviously very important, but for the last several years (5th and 6th editions), the primacy of killing has been de-emphasized a bit. The rules of the game, in most scenarios, do not care who has sustained/inflicted more total damage, when determining who wins.

If you can reliably establish control over more objectives by game end than your opponent, despite sustaining greater casualities than he does, you can reliably win. It's often easier to achieve this result if your opponent is excessively-focused on killing stuff and units "making their points back."

If a given unit, like a transport, a Tervigon, or a cheap unit of grots, reliably helps you achieve that game state, despite never killing anything, it is a very valuable unit, despite being useless by the measuring stick of "making its points back."
