"A good commander first seeks to put himself beyond the possibility of defeat, then waits for his opponent to make a mistake." -Sun Tzu, Thae Art of War. (Paraphrase)

Kind of what I see in the Tau. Expand, push into new resources, back away from threats. Then wait for an oppurtunity. They enjoy a unified interstellar empire, not just connected empire. They are technologists, and have already paralleled most other races in technology, so future advances put them a cut above. And lack of psyker powers is their number one asset. They might need it to defeat necrons like everyone suggests, until they get good enough at tech to literally 'dismantle' if you will the Grand Toaster Army. They'll be fine, unless their unity continues to degrade like it has with the farsight enclaves.

Thousand Sons Battleship wandering the galaxy...

Saying the Tau can surpass Necron technology (which is millions of years ahead of even the Eldar, except in the field of psychic engineering) is like saying pigs can fly.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.'

Tau have huge potential but like eveyone else have their weakneses:

There is potential civil war looming over the Farsight situation.
They do not seem to fully understand the dangers of the human and other psykers they are eomcompasing in the Greater Good. Whilst they are "blunt" thats no full protection - they can be physically corrupted and attacked directly.
They have been "noticed" by both the Dark Eldar and the Necrons - not good.
They have limited Warp drives and without Navigators - and the inherient dangers of them - seem to have reached their limits here. This will also strain the unity of their empire as it grows larger as they don't have astropaths either.
machine inteliigences turned on humanity - there is always the possibility that as the Tau AIs get better they may rebel - and/or become corrupted by the warp themselves.

I AM A MARINE PLAYER

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos

"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
