One guy at my FLGS plays the Epic Sax Guy during his shooting phase when he plays Noise Marines.

When I'm painting, I usually just set my library to shuffle and let it play anything from Muse to Whitechapel. Or I might set up some Youtube playlists and watch/listen to that.

I usually don't play music in any sort of unfamiliar or competitive environment, but I usually do when it's just me and some friends over playing Casualhammer. And when we do listen to music, it's usually an odd mix of dubstep, "modern" hard metal (like, what some people falsely call screamo), and more classic metal (my personal favorites) like Metallica and Black Sabbath.

As for playing a game of 40k? You can't beat a bit of this....

For me it has to be Hawkwind. While there are few other bands I like that have tracks that are suitable for 40k, Hawkwind's music seems to catch the atmosphere of 40k for me. Anyone familiar with their live Space Ritual album will know what I'm talking about. Another of their tracks; Fable of a failed race, seems to catch the Eldar perfectly.

I really don't like playing stuff I hear on the radio, because chances are it's a song they run into the ground, and that would irritate me enough to stop painting and get back on my computer to change the song.

My local gw plays metal, but has a weird mix of j-pop/k-pop. Guess one of the guys there likes that kind of stuff

Quick additional question. Anyone know any good songs for orks or dark eldar?

I imagine DE would likely be gothy EBM / industrial donce and ork might feel good with sea shanties.

In my experience it is hard to juggle your plans while listening to donce music.

I find music distracting so I don't play any during table top.Although I always thought Mars from the planets would be good for guard... and for the end of that game jupiter to finish.

Personally, I just throw some pendulum at my ears while I'm on space marine...Works well for me

With Chaos, Tzeench would probably turn your hands, feet and face into
scrotums, complete with appropriate nerve endings. Then Khorne would
force you and all your friends to fight to the death using your new
scrotal appendages. Once they get tired of that, you get tossed to
Slaanesh who <censored by order of the Inquisition>, until you finally
end up in Nurgle's clutches and he uses you as a loofah.

Exalted.

I specifically make sure that I listen to Top 40 or country on my way to the store, because I know that I will never, ever hear anything like that once I'm there.

Iron Maiden is my go-to when I think of 'inspiring' music. Meshuggah is also a favorite, as is Lamb of God. Chimaira as well. All three bands have several tracks that inspire the pitch and roll of combat.

it depends on who is around at the time. otherwise i'm not sure dubstep or electronic music, or space themed dub. music which is bio mech and fairly chilled out yet expands the mind allowing to get both in theme as well as transport you to the scene of battle (works for Xenos races) or Man o War.... for anything else

I play guard, so if I'm loosing it's "you're gonna go far kid" by the offspring, because generally the life of a guardsmen is summed up by the line "dance, , dance; you never had a chance."

but my army's official theme song is a cover of "short change hero" by rexon (the original band is heavy, rexon's cover can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vshDh8OldZE) because I like the theme of the song for my renegade guard, and several units in my army have a borderlands subtheme (my guardsmen marbo is lilith)

When asked by a German Officer to surrender his forces at Mortain, Lieutenant Kerley of the 30th Infantry Division replied by saying "Go f**k yourself."
