They are viable but they have some significant weaknesses. The most serious is the lack of mobile firepower and your vulnerability when crossing open ground.

I ran a pure foot army for a couple of years but I eventually added a single tank platoon to keep light armour off my exposed infantry and to act as a mobile reserve. You don't need a lot of armour though, if you have enough AT assets.

If you are doing a fortification army (I don't think that you have the option for this though) you can easily get by with no armour at all.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Last squad for the 1st Platoon finished:

Once again, I keep on forgetting to touch up the edge of the base before taking the picture . Experimented more with rocks this time. Changing the color of the rocks up just a bit to give them some more definition from the rest of the base and added a fallen tree instead of a trunk to one of them. Still trying to keep them from becoming repetitive. I think the basic dirt/small rocks/1-2 big rocks as well as the colors and the two types of grass should be the main focus that ties them together. But other than that I am trying to vary the trees, trunks, extra rocks, shrubs, etc to make it seem like an actual battlefield that they are crawling across.

I also found a little accessory that was a leftover from the Adepticon grab bag in April that I would never use for its intended purpose, but I am going to try out something special with it.

As far as all infantry lists go it just seems like the GJ lists don't have that great of support options as far as armored goes. It's either a lot of points in two 4 StuG platoons (one of which is OOP and very hard to find) or just go for a couple Tigers.

Although I think if push comes to shove I should be able to play these guys as Grenadiers since the model count and weapons would be WYSIWYG.

Trying to work my way through the 2nd Infantry platoon. Been lazy and/or busy with Christmas stuff so I am deviating form my one-squad-at-a-time model and I am just assembly lining the whole platoon. I have been doing just one color at a time and then walking away from them for a bit before I go cross-eyed but I should be able to have this platoon done before the end of the year.

I am also working on a test version for a piece of scenery I want to try out. Any tips for painting explosions?

Regarding the explosions. I stumbled across this showcase thread http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/495757.page the OP linked the tutorial to build such markers in his thread. I tried it out and it looks fantastic.

So here is what I was playing around with. From the guys over at Armorcast, who make your bolters look like they are firing...

I got a backage of these bolter-muzzle-flashes in my grab-bag at Adepticon this year. Never used them since I think they look somewhat silly. I ran across them the other day and I thought that they might look halfway decent as actual small explosions in 15mm scale. They have a smaller crater that blows away from the impact and then the taller piece going straight up:

Tried to make it an impact from maybe a small mortar or something? I don't know if it really works although I liked the idea. I don't think it is big enough for a proper explosion. My other through would be to only have the very center in red/yellow to show some fire and have the tall portion be colored like the ground again to show it blowing into the air.

Good idea, so/so idea, get that crap out of here?

Got some decent progress today, got the whole second platoon painted and got their tiny little bases done. Will glue them to the actual bases tomorrow.

Since I can't be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel I went ahead and ordered 2 15cm sIG33s and a Tiger E.

Blurry picture, but proof that I am working on stuff

Finished basing the 2nd platoon, also have the HMG platoon primed and ready for painting next.

Did some more work today, might have the ground finished of the 2nd platoon by the end of the day.

I also finished up my 3 StuGs except for the decals and the commander. Tried my hand at some German camo without an airbrush and I think it turned out decent for a first patch. The patterns improved by the third tank .

I think the tracks might look better with changing the wheels over to the same yellow as the tanks though, just seems like too much metal...

And my next vehicle:

Gotta start painting up a Tiger E.
