Normally a list that doesn't take allies does better, unless the allies taken provide something the main army doesn't have, such as psy defense.

The strongest alliance is fking nercons and GK, and it's stupid on top of that.

I was just about to say that, though slightly different wording.

I think that allies are great in providing a niche that your army lacks and more importantly needs.

A lot of the 4ed armies really benefit from allies to fill in the flier niche that didn't exist back then and even out some of the rough edges that the edition changes gives to the codex. Otherwise it really just depends on what your running.

BTW I just realized that IG can field something on the order of 4000 pts of stuff in the allies FOC and all that stuff is good without any unnecessary upgrades. That is actually fantastic synergy with IG fluff.

When the old Chaos Codex was still being used in 6th edition, I used Daemon Allies with my Chaos Marines. The Personal Icons in the Rhinos on Plague Marines made that a super amazing team up and delivery system for the Flamers, even though they weren't the updated Flamers yet.

I view the benefits of Allies as tremendous potential. You can either get 2 cheap huge Troop options for example, or other fast or deepstriking units for example, or long range blasts, so many possibilities! Of course Nids can't use any Allies but they don't need them. I think because they're not from our galaxy.
