Hey... been meaning to ask you. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're a brit living in the states... right?
What's you perception to our "violence" here? Are we that more dangerous?
EDIT: I've been to Paris, France... and man, at night, it can get spooky there... o.O
Yes, I'm a Brit living in the US, married to an American. I've lived in rural Britain, inner city Britain, rural America and we've just moved to a satellite town to Boston.
You are less casually violent than inner city Britain. You do far far more talking about it though, Americans in the redneck bars I drank in talked a big fight and boosted themselves up with machismo all the time. Lot's of arguments were 'Yeah?', 'Yeah!', 'Oh YeAHHH?', 'HELL YEAH' and lots of standing up waiting to be held back by their mates from getting into a fight they wouldn't actually get into. In comparison, usually confrontations in the UK, both rural and inner city would have resulted in direct violence several postures previous.
You are considerably more lethally violent. Even living in a little town like Willamsport, the homicide rate was high, there were lots going on there whilst we were living in that area. In part due to the relocation of certain drug and gang problem people from Philly, others from the high rate of constantly drunk and variable character gas workers and rednecks. In comparison, when I was living in Bristol, 6th largest city in the UK, a guy was fatally stabbed during the city carnival and it was news for weeks.
I felt far safer in inner city Bristol than I did in rural PA. I was subjected to 3 attempted muggins in the city, on none of the occasions did the assailant actually get my possessions and on two of the occasions ended up eating pavement/being thrown into a garden. I would have absolutely complied with a mugger with a gun. I'm enjoying living on the coast though, people seem considerably less 'hills have eyes' here so far.
Huh...
Thanks... it's interesting to get these sort of perspectives.
THREE attempted muggings?!?! Damn... where the feth do you go? o.O
I've been living in North St. Louis, St. Louis city and the counties and never gotten close to be mugged. But, then again, maybe I'm the spooky one. o.O (just kidding... )
THe worst thing happened to me was soneone broke into my car trying to get a DVD player... it was just a DVD box filled with knicknacks...

White guy in a suit, 30s, drunk on all 3 occasions, wandering through Bedminster/Redcliff late Friday/Saturday night, early Saturday/Sunday morning. Some lads decided to take the chance.1st was a black kid with 'a knife' in his pocket. I demanded to see it, called his bluff and then punched him to the deck, he ran away. 2nd was a couple of chavs, I reassured them very loudly I would kill at least one of them, they backed off deciding that I wasn't worth it. 3rd was a north african or somalian kid, very tall but with no meat on his bones, almost exactly outside my apartment, ran out of the bushes behind me and punched me on the back of the head (because hitting skull bone is going to drop me?) I was so drunk I asked him what he was doing and told him to piss off, getting increasingly angry that I'd dropped my falafel, he punched me again, on the shoulder I think and I picked him up and threw him into the hedge, again shouting and snarling a lot. I think, on reflection, that the two white chavs might well have taken me down had they had more confidence. I relied on bluff and making myself seem more trouble than I was worth on that occasion. Bedminster is no playground but not the roughest area of Bristol, strangely I've walked through the very worst areas like Eastern and St Pauls as late and as drunk a few times totally without incident.

I've seen pics. I'm surprised people would try to mug you, and not surprised the result was things like " I picked him up and threw him into the hedge."
I've not been mugged. I've had people look at me like they were thinking about it, but then thought differently after I'd smile or pat my side. But mostly I stay away from higher risk areas.
I'm not nearly as worried about my self as I am the wife and kids. Of course, we're Texans and don't walk anywhere.

Theres just a boatload more crazy in the motherland. Off the top of my head I can name 6 militias and one militant cult. The low population density is like a magnet for crazy. There's the normal amount amongst the native plus the imports, like say Ted Kazinsky.

Religious cults are the most dangerous ones.

They own a big chuck of a square mile section just North of us, and were a part of the fire district I volunteered with. It's a weird place, I think it's both the worldwide HQ of the church and also a University (with a very small enrollment consisting only of church members. We went on a medical call there once and after we drove through the gate and at every possible intersection/turn inside the compound was a guard that made sure we found the way down the correct way. Although I am not lying when I say it felt more like they made sure that we didn't go anywhere they didn't want us to.
I did feel kind of brazen one time when we were doing business inspections and decided that I am just going to drive into the "compound" and march up to the front desk in the administration building to tell them that I am here to inspect the place . After a lot of "can he do that?" (technically no) and "they have never inspected us before..." the main maintenance administrator came out and took me and the rookie on a tour of all the buildings. I was making notes and drawing little maps on my clipboard when he asked me what I was doing that for, so I told him that we try to have pre-plans for all the buildings so we knew where everything was in case there was a fire. He asked me if we wanted the blue prints for all the buildings, so I took him up on that offer. When the Sheriff department found out we had all the blue prints they made copies of them all for the FBI
We would always tease our poor chief about them. Everytime we got a new fire engine we would wash it and tell him "this will look so nice when the CNN helicopter films us putting out the fire from the ATF/FBI raid on the compound...

In the 90s there was a study post Oklahoma City. PA had a massive number of identified "militia" groups, and did indeed rival Montana. Texas of course had bigger groups, because everything is bigger in Texas.

Pretty sure it is biased, but from my experiences with them I can believe it.
They think that there will be a big battle for the end times and they got a couple air strips in their compound for flying in their leaders and supplies for a last stand there.

Hillary Clinton hospitalized after doctors discover blood clot By NBC News staff
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was admitted to a New York City hospital on Sunday after doctors discovered that a blood clot had formed, the State Department said in a statement.
Philippe Reines, a deputy assistant secretary, said in the statement that the clot stems from a concussion Clinton sustained several weeks ago.
Reines said that Clinton, 65, is being treated with anti-coagulants at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. She will be monitored there for the next 48 hours, he said.
“Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion," he said. "They will determine if any further action is required.”
Clinton sustained the concussion from fainting earlier in December. She had been sick for several days with the flu and had canceled a trip to Morocco where she was to officially recognize the Syrian rebels.
Brain injury doctors told NBC News said that although details haven't been made public, initial reports indicate that Clinton may have developed a blood clot in her lower limbs as a result of prolonged rest and inactivity after her recent concussion.
A deep vein thrombosis, known as a DVT, or a dural venous sinus thrombosis, could be two types of blood clots treated with anticoagulants, said Dr. Alex Valadka, a spokesman for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. A blood clot could be dangerous if it breaks free and lodges in a vital organ, such as the heart. A deep vein thrombosis could be serious, but not necessarily life-threatening, and would require months of treatment with blood-thinning drugs, said Dr. Inam Kureshi, chief of neurosurgery at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn.
"Usually hospitalization is more of a precaution," Kureshi said.
It is possible that Clinton developed a blood clot elsewhere, including her brain. Doctors interviewed would not speculate about treatment or prognosis for the secretary of state.
Days after she fainted, State Department officials said she was at home recovering. Officials also issued a statement from Dr. Lisa Bardack of Mount Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University that provided more information about the secretary's condition:
"Secretary Clinton developed a stomach virus, leading to extreme dehydration, and subsequently fainted. Over the course of this week we evaluated her and ultimately determined she had also sustained a concussion. We recommended that the Secretary continue to rest and avoid any strenuous activity, and strongly advised her to cancel all work events for the coming week. We will continue to monitor her progress as she makes a full recovery."
It wasn’t the first time Clinton passed out while sick with a stomach bug. As a U.S. senator representing New York, Clinton fainted in 2005 during a speech in Buffalo after complaining of a stomach virus.
NBC's Robert Bazell tells MSNBC's Chris Jansing that it is unclear how severe the blood clot could be for the health of Sec. of State Hillary Clinton, given lack of specific information about her condition on Sunday evening.
I'm not a doctor but a DVT is pretty serious, right?

Blood clot is very serious... however, it's not caused by her concussion.

I think that's the most significant impediment to her future presidental aspirations - even independents are going to find her to simply be too old and possibly frail, depending on what the next few years bring.

She could still have a good run depending on who she would pick for vice. Part of the undoing for McCain was that people realized he could actually die and we would have President Palin...

My feeling is that the tidal wave of first-black-president coupled with Bush fatigue was totally insurmountable no matter who ran. I don't think McCain ran the most awesome campaign, and I think Palin was a huge mistake, but truthfully I don't think any Republican could have won in that set of circumstances.
