I like how we're doing more work than OP...

Yeah, I see what you mean. The Emperor's Swords Mk.III now find themselves on the run as the Alpha Legion chases them down, demanding they return what they were going to steal in the first place, which the Emperor's Swords Mk.III may or may not have.

And if you want another "Oh god damn it" moment, the Alpha Legion could be chasing them towards the Eastern Fringe.

And there might be some angry Necrons involved, too.

Spoiler:
By the way, if you haven't guessed yet, the Emperor's Swords are probably just a deep cover cell of the Alpha Legion.

I know, which is why I was talking about the Alpha Legion being hand delivered gene stock.

To fill in that blank, you may want to look through the new Necron dex.

I'm doing that as we speak... type... something..

anyways, how extensive is the alpha legion's intelligence network? It strikes me that since the alpha legion created the subconscious triggers in the populace, they could, in fact wait until the whole chapter was on their homeworld (and they could have arranged that to happen as well).

So, is there a possibility that the legion could have missed some of the marines? Could they have been assigned elsewhere... Maybe... How about this? The inquisition had requisitioned about half a company (give or take) to help them on their missions. It's the inquisition so it's all hush hush, and really, 50 fewer space marines wouldn't be that noticeable in a fortress monastery.

And here's my thoughts as to why the alpha legion did so much legwork to see the chapter destroyed... cause damn... they did not mess around with this one. Implanting generation after generation with mind control shtuff... but why? Possibly because the Emperor's swords found something with regards to the alpha legion itself. Maybe they didn't even know it, maybe some long forgotten records or evidence pointing to the fact that the alpha legion has even less clear motives than the rest of the galaxy thinks, something with regards to their dealings with the cabal or something. The alpha legion could little afford to have their true motives known to the IoM, and therefore the rest of the galaxy, so they plotted, and watched, and struck when they were sure that their blow would end those that could threaten them...

But they were wrong...

The "secret" of the Emperor's Swords is in spoiler tags above, lol.

It reminds me of how Alpharius himself would just disappear in the midst of battle to see how well the Legion would do -- and then reappear right over your shoulder to check up. Consummate trolls.
