5 with Jump Packs and Meltabombs never failed to make me giggle in Apocalypse games.

In 5th Edition, I ran 5 of them, without Jump Packs, armed with BP/CCW (and a Relic Blade on the Sergeant) with Pedro Kantor in a Land Raider. Fairly expensive, but dished out the hurt, as nobody expected the sheer number of strikes this squad could pull off at I4. The only things this squad couldn't handle were higher-I attackers with power weapons (LC Termies come to mind) and massive hordes on the charge.

To be fair, though, a group of LC Termies could do what this squad did, but better, at only an approximate 60 point increase (not including the Raider, which could be used by both).

If it's vehicles you're hoping to catch on the drop, sternguard are better. 5 combi meltas in a drop pod is still cheap and if they're dropped carefully, you can block a lot of return fire with the pod and use them in following turns too.
Really, you only want vanguard for infantry targets.

Totally. But the meltabomb thing is something nobody expects. It's funny for the look on your opponent's face when you say "I'm bringing Vanguard Vets", and when said Vets destroy an Eldar Titan in your first round in Apoc.
